A French entry in the psycho children genre. Four spoiled brats drown their babysitter in a prank, Alain Delon witness it and decides to take advantage, unaware the little shits brains have been so poisoned by violent TV that they are very dangerous. Moralistic, dumb and the easy ironies never work, but director Leroy does a real good job with his young actors and he uses Delon star power rather well. More important, it is very creepy and weird which is all anyone really wants from a psycho children movie.
Conventional wisdom that is derived from the horror and thriller genres as well as the overlap between them, teaches us that anything can kill us whether it be masked murderers, sharks, birds, dolls, bongs, tomatoes, or even children. Typically in films involving children who kill the kids are inherently evil whether it be through supernatural means such as in The Omen, as a result of psychosis, or as a byproduct of cult-like indoctrination as seen in Children of the Corn and such bottom shelf affairs like Troma's own Beware! Children at Play.
Attention, les Enfants Regardent diverges from these tropes in that the titular children are merely victims of circumstance rather psychopathic killers. The first death is really just manslaughter…
Interesting French language obscurity from the late 70's, this thriller is about four kids left to fend for themselves when they basically drown their Spanish nanny when they push her out to sea on a rubber raft. The only witness is a creepy bastard played by Alain Delon, and he becomes even more of an ultra creepy bastard as the film goes on and he stalks the kids, who are only interested in watching TV, eating junk food, building an elaborate sand castle (!), and bullying their fat brother, who they call Butterball. It's actually kind of amazing that this is as obscure as it is, as it's a pretty damn good film-kind of like a slow moving Home Alone with some serious blood and super strong language. I'm willing to bet, since it's an MGM release, it's got a boutique Blu-Ray release in it's future.
the kids french was so hard to understand and no english subtitles available but i loved when the kid called alain delon a cunt and him just randomly assaulting all of them AND THR FATHER SLIPPING UP AND CALLUNG HIS SON FAT? not sure if i made that up. great film
