This is a film that I've notice on Netflix a number of times, but for some reason or another I kept on passing it by. I'm not to sure, this is a genre I'm a sucker for and the kind of thing I just eat up, so I decided to finally bit the bullet and give it a watch.

Possession horror/black comedy mash up set amongst the NYC hipster scene. Ava (Louisa Kraus) is recovering from a demonic possession, after committing a string of crimes while under possession she is forced to attend a spirits anonymous group to avoid doing jail time and with little memory of the incident she has to piece together the details leading up to the possession to find out who put the curse on her. Krause proves to be a likeable lead presence and she's well supported by the likes of Deborah Rush, Lou Taylor Pucci, Annabelle Dexter-Jones and a scene stealing performance from Wass Stevens as Tony, the leader of the possession group.

Another movie that thankfully dispenses with the exorcism cliches and deals more with the after effects, in a comedic matter-of-fact way, with a splash of noirish mystery to it. It has a charming sense of humor and a wonderful visual eye, creating a sort of technicolor 60's sitcom palette at times. Fun performances and unique ideas carry it.

Based on the premise, I was expecting kind of Venom Goes to Rehab of sorts, but the protagonist and her demon don't even interact. The whole thing is cheap and not subtle, and aside from stylish lighting and some scattered humor, ultimately a disappointment.
wish they hadn't gone with the weird shock value ending but this was a very interesting and refreshing take on the demonic possession subgenre, absolutely none of the characters motivations were in any way understandable but it was still fun!
I like a movie universe that’s just slightly off center. That appears mostly normal but there are a few things that make it clearly not reality. Its more subversive than straight forward fantasy or horror in my opinion. Its devious and tantalizing because it seems close to normal. Its not safely different. And when you throw in a comic absurdist element to it, it works even better. Ava’s Possessions certainly creates that slightly off center universe in this film but it kind of undermines itself by seriously watering down the comic elements only to try to focus on the more serious (and dark) aspect of this slightly absurd world it takes place in and that was disappointing. This is one of those movies where you don't understand the point of it. The story isn't simple or concise enough to follow the protagonist's progressions, and the horror comedy/mix doesn't blend well so it borders on mildly dramatic. It's fine, I guess.

A giallo mystery wrapped in possession-clothing, Ava's Possessions looks great and has a unique world, but when you can multitask during the entire film and not only follow it along, but still see every twist coming (and there are a lot of them), it feels like they haven't achieved what they wanted to. The cast is solid, the mystery is somewhat engaging, but the visuals are what to come for. I just wish the worldbuilding was more coherent than it is; one minute, spiritual possession seems to be something everyone knows about in this world, but in the next people react like being possessed is a joke. Also, the central metaphor of addiction = possession falls apart very quickly. Still, while it's a little murky, there's enough fun to be had with this one to warrant a watch if you're into this kind of thing.
After joining a post-possession recovery group, Ava learns there was more to her demon problem than she thought. Flawed, but fun. TIL: Numerous psychologist give lots of secular reasons why Catholic exorcisms work... basically admitting that they work.
