The third of the Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland "Backyard Musicals". I was THRILLED to see Virginia Weidler in a film again! That girl had talent. Rooney is a polarizing actor. I know he's talented but sometimes he's just too much. He was tolerable in this although a few of his numbers went on too long.
Garland was 19 at the time. Halfway through production she secretly went to Las Vegas to marry David Rose. That would explain why she looked so happy, healthy and lovely. She was in love! ❤️
In addition to the "kids", some of my favorite character actors were in it: James Gleason, Fay Bainter, Donald Meek. Margaret O'Brien (uncredited) plays a little girl who gives an emotional audition. It's her film debut.
The songs were fine but the dance numbers were pretty terrific. That should come as no surprise considering the director was Busby Berkeley!
