Cinema peaked in 2003 when Michael Shannon, playing a KKK member in Bad Boys II, yells "we've got our rights!" and Will Smith's Mike Lowery responds with "why don't you exercise your right to shut the fuck up?"
"we're americans, okay?" this one opens with the insecure, immature, hyper-violent macho duo as undercover klansmen (will smith framed in a slomo, low-angle hero shot dual-wielding in front of a burning cross) and ends with them literally invading cuba, heroically performing an extrajudicial massacre with the CIA and using a giant yellow hummer to detonate a poor housing community. probably the most ideologically incoherent and repulsively maximalist depiction of american exceptionalism/imperialism ever crafted, and because of that also probably the most honest one. a movie that hates you and itself. the rats fuck like us.
there's a part of me that believes in hope, love, and the endless beauty of the universe, that marvels at the wonders humanity is able to create, that knows despite everything there is something in us worth saving. and there's a part of me that fucking hates everyone, that sometimes wants to throw up my hands in anger and defeat and sit in a lawn chair and watch the world nuke itself. the only time those two parts overlap and merge into one coherent thought is when i watch this movie

Michael Bay unhinged, but since he's always loose, then what do we call this titan of horror, fucked-up ideals, "comedy", and rollicking rollercoaster mechanics? A masterwork I guess. Also a cinematic prism if there ever was one, only in the sense that it's completely free from decency but aware of its material and utterly confident in every frame. It distorts the very images that are being sent towards us, as if an unrefined and addled experience will distract from the actual *content* of the film, but it's not like Bay gives a fuck what we think anyway. Not a second of its rat-fucking, KKK energy is inherently enjoyable, but the eerie fascination that I continue to have with it will never fade. Cinema as an assaultive journey of perpetual sunsets and slow-motion sliminess. Let's beam it into the stars. Maybe the martians can figure it out.

Until just now, I didn't even realize this 4K package has both the first and second films in it. I just bought it for the second film, which is the most amoral, insane bit of nonsense Michael Bay has ever committed to film.
