Likeable but slight comedy which never seems to decide on quite the right tone. When it's funny, it hits the right spots (the dance competition, the Titanic reenactments) but it also goes for serious, and sometimes very darkly serious which doesn't sit well.
Fortunately there are nicely played performances from our leads with the director taking one of those roles and proving to be an able match to the legendary Catherine Deneuve, in a rare role where she eschews glamour for a glimpse into Deneuve as a 70 year old woman (although her animal print outfit early on is a scream). Resnais regular André Dussollier rounds out the adults well, while the kids in this may not quite convince as street smart, they still have plenty of charm.
This could easily be two separate films and perhaps should have been - not quite a mess but never reaching its full potential.
