Last night we were talking about David Bradley, particularly his upcoming performance as the First Doctor in this year's Doctor Who Christmas special. I casually mentioned that my favourite thing he'd done was this comedy pilot by Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, a Yorkshire-set parody of Dynasty-style upper-crust US soap operas with an extraordinary cast: Bradley, Olivia Colman, Reece Shearsmith, Julia Davis, Sharon Horgan, Peter Serafinowicz, Kayvan Novak and Julia Deakin. Nobody could quite believe it existed, so off we went to director Ben Palmer's Vimeo account for proof.
It's every bit as good as I remember. Bradley plays Ralphred, the head of a mining company with horrifically unsafe operations spread across the world; Colman, as his tragically naïve daughter…
olivia colman is the most adorable person in the world, protect her at all costs
that eating egg with shell scene made me physically gag
I've been on a little Julia Davis kick recently and it's been awfully good fun revisiting some of the failed pilots she was a part of as well as her fully commissioned programmes. I vaguely remember seeing "Bad Sugar" when it first aired back in 2012 because I couldn't resist a who's who of comedy. Alongside Davis, we have Sharon Horgan, Olivia Colman, Peter Serafinowicz, Kayvan Novak, Reece Shearsmith... And it's only bloody written by Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, what a crème de la crème of hilarity!
All of that makes it all the more baffling why "Bad Sugar" wasn't picked up for a series. Its playful pastiche of Dynasty-esque programmes where the obscenely rich act rich with obscenity…
A one-off from Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain. It has the same basic plot as Succession, but with the dumbass humour of Star Stories. The first act of Bad Sugar is absolutely incredible, but it all falls apart when everyone starts trying to seduce each other. Still, I'm impressed that they managed to get so many great comic actors in the same room.
This is a perfect ensemble, with perfect comic timing, parodying American melodrama perfectly. So many good lines, I can’t imagine it as a series because how could they have sustained this level of energy.
