This movie's a family project, and fun, with a lot of valuable interviewees who were there, worked with Berns, admirers of his productions. Great music featured here. But I bet there are a lot of stories that wouldn't make the cut for this story about Saint Bert and faithful wife Ilene. The label continued until the late 70s, but the movie ends when Berns dies in late '67. I prefer the warts-and-all approach generally, but of course you won't get that here. We can't even hear the story (from Van Morrison, who's present, amazingly) about his slapdash record to get out of his contract? It's a great anecdote!
Biodoc of songwriter/producer/record label owner Bert Berns sticks to being more celebratory than critical, with Steven Van Zandt doing Underground Garage anecdotal narration. Succeeds at capturing the hustle and create potential hits world of NYC’s early to mid-1960s music industry.
