I love the friendship between Jon and Damien. I hope some writer doesn't throw one of them into some black hole and age him up for no good reason.
This movie is actually very good. The super sons are a good dynamic duo. Definitely worth watching.
Starro from the latest Suicide Squad flick attacks the animated DC Universe, and the only two that manage to avoid getting face-fished is Damian Wayne & Jonathan Kent, the two most super sons in their universe. Personally I have had to warm up to Damian Wayne in these animated features, in his debut he was painted as a petulant angry teen. I didn't care too much for that. Here though he seems to have kept his trolling wit but has lost much of the teenage petulance that the character had in previous entries. With Damian being an enjoyable character for once this was a really good watch. Sure there were a few stretches that had pacing issues, but most if not…
The animation style and the fact that it centers on lil Bats and Supes made me think this would be a DC Muppet Babies type thing, but man, it's actually fucked. Starro's back and more parasitic than ever, causing people's eyes to roll around and their fingers to contort in gross ways before starfish burst out of their mouths, all like, "It's me, hi. I'm the problem, it's me" (y'all hooked on Midnights, too?). It's gnarly, and a good excuse for Damian and Jon to take on their dads and other compromised superfolk in really well choreographed, brutal exchanges. The setup also gives rise to some very memorable moments, e.g. Lois Lane channeling R.J. MacReady and blasting President Lex Luthor (a Trump analog, rendering it all the more satisfying) in the face with a homemade flamethrower. Def worth checking out, buds!
“Come on, farm boy, gotta go save our dads.”
Yay, DC’s beloved little super-brats in their own animated movie! Battle of the Super Sons (2022) exudes yet another pretty fun time for a formulaic superhero flick in the DC Universe Animated Movies. Love that they gave this junior dynamic duo personalities recognisable to their audience (although I don’t see the necessity of whitewashing Damian when they could’ve just left his skin tone as it is, smh).
While the animation itself was lacking, the core dynamic between Damian and Jon and to a lesser extent, their father’s is what is really special here. There isn’t really exciting action though and while the story is enjoyable, it is fairly predictable and ends so quickly.
I liked this. Solid story for the entire duration and our main characters weren’t even annoying. They fit so much in here and it felt like a breath of fresh air. More like this please.
