Ari Aster, if you read this, please DM me!! I would like to connect you to a prayer line! It is a phone number where anywhere from 4 to 13 menopausal, Afro-Caribbean, Pentecostal women from the church I grew up going to will pray with you and FOR YOU on the phone for however long you need. You just dial in. You don’t even have to speak! There is NO pressure. Let them pray for you! Ari, DM me! Please!!! Let these women lay spiritual hands on you! Contact me ASAP!!!
Don't worry, the "funny" Ari Aster movie is still a three-hour waking nightmare.
A film that asks the age-old question: is it more terrifying to be chased down the street by a naked man wielding a rusty knife…. OR…. to wake up in the bedroom of a kpop fan?
IMAX is nice but if you really want the full Beau Is Afraid experience I recommend guiltily asking your single Jewish mother to schlep into the city and babysit your kids so that you can go see it.
F- CinemaScore, will lose A24 millions of dollars, made for almost nobody, viscerally stunning, best movie I’ve ever seen, Patti Lupone Oscar.
A 3 hour Oedipal journey and nightmarish descent into the psyche of a broken man seems like it would be up my alley, but I found Aster’s latest to be a mostly shallow attempt at exploring guilt (and some intense mommy issues). The downside to giving Aster a playground to exploit the creative corners of his mind is the loss of focus, which I feel like this movie desperately needs.
Yet despite being the film equivalent of word vomiting an essay due at midnight, it’s unique weirdness does give it a sort of admirable charm. Aster is undeniably talented and it’s cool to see him make something clearly personal. I just hope he calls his mom soon.
