timothée: i don’t do meth! *sneaks off to do meth*
steve carrell: WHHY ARE YOU RUNNING?? WHY ARE YOU RUNNING????????
imagine this but repeated every 20 minutes over the course of 2 hours and you have beautiful boy (2018)
Steve Carell plucking some random girl off the street and pinning her as a meth addict just because she looked a little grungy was... a choice?? hope he doesn't catch me on one of my off days
I was nervous about this film going in, being a big admirer of the book. But it is possibly the most realistic depiction of addiction at a young age that I've ever seen -- right up there with Christiane F. Or maybe it just most accurately reflects my own experience of battling drug addiction. A masterful, music-centric exploration of abnormal psychology and substance dependence. Some viewers may take issue with the soundtrack structure, but I felt it flawlessly articulated all of the appropriate feelings associated with chemical abuse, and the destruction of everything in its wake. I am entirely emotionally eviscerated but, above all else, simply grateful to be alive.
one of the scenes in the book that impacted me the most was the one where karen sees nic drive off and she chases him with her car, and i’m so happy it made it into the film (even though it’s done differently but hey we’re not nitpicky). but they ommitted the line which made the whole thing stick to my mind, so i’ll just share it here:
“Later, when we're alone, she [Karen] confides to me [David], "I wanted to tell him to get help, but mostly I was chasing him—chasing him away from our house—from Jasper and Daisy.””
amazon studios have recognised my 2 weaknesses
• a focus on a soft father/son relationship
• michael scotts struggle for happiness
just the fact that my baby timothee is going from precocious musical intelligent 17 year old bisexual to meth addict is a lot for me to handle....
I really like Felix van Groeningen. I have seen The Broken Circle Breakdown and The Misfortunates. Hoping to catch up on the rest of his filmography soon.
Interesting that the PR on this film seems to make it about the opiod epidemic when it's really about methamphetamine addiction. I know people on meth and unfortunately I didn't quite believe the portrayal of it in this film. On a positive note, I thought Steve Carell was quite believable as the enabling dad.
