A passage early on in which Stokes is shown engaging "the Beast" in training is supposed to burnish the film Amazon presumably ordered about a troubled man who becomes a national hero, but jars with what the documentary would become in the midst of his sabbatical.
With so much to cover it's a non-linear whistle-stop tour of the major milestones in Stokes' professional life that makes room for astonishing footage of Stokes with his father in the weeks before his death.
