Max is a handsome young man who, after a fateful tryst with a German soldier, is forced to run for his life. Eventually Max is placed in a concentration camp where he pretends to be Jewish because in the eyes of the Nazis, gays are the lowest form of human being. This was great. Considering it’s a film about a WW2 concentration camp, by great I mean completely heartbreaking. There was a lot of sadness in this movie but it was amazing the little bits of joy it managed to show. Those scenes between Clive Owen and Lothaire Bluteau were very memorable.
There seems to be a lot of praise for this movie but unfortunately Bent didn't have the same affect on me as it seems to have had with others. Don't get me wrong, there is a great story in here somewhere, but the script is a complete mess; it needed tightening up in so many areas.
I must also disagree with the majority and say that I didn't find the performances all that great. It was performed more like a stage play, with exaggerated emotions and facial expressions for the people on the back row. I'm not suggesting the performances were terrible, they weren't, but they certainly weren't good enough to make me invest in the characters.

Both Sean Mathias and Martin Sherman (who also writes the screenplay) draw moments of great poetic beauty and powerful gay nuances from the darkest of periods through conscious sensibility, a strong sense of intimacy, and Clive Owen and Lothaire Bluteau's brilliant performances.

For the people who are tired of seeing gay suffering, this is a nightmare of WWII masc-experimental brutalism neck deep in bloody waters, but it’s probably perfect for people who want exactly that. Living on enemy territory, burdened by identity, running gravestones in a bundle of chains that forgive no loving man. Some of it is as deep as queer misery gets. I wrote almost two pages of notes while I was watching Bent, it was an EXTREMELY interesting film and a completely different take on the Holocaust, far different than anything I have ever seen before.
I have an upcoming presentation, the theme I have to tackle is 'taboos and tropes of the Holocaust.' The two films we're watching for this are Bent and Fateless (which I've yet to watch). Queer victims of the Holocaust have long been overlooked in world history in general, likely because of how invisible they were: while at least 15,000 were murdered in the concentration camps (not a measly number by any means, but a number all the same), there were many who were tried instead as “a-socials” (particularly lesbian women and trans/gender nonconforming people) or made deals to be identified as one group instead of another. I really wanted to like this. The concept seemed fascinating and it has a great cast (Clive Owen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Ian McKellan, Paul Bettany, Rachel Weicz Mick Jagger, Jude Law). But unfortunately it didn’t work for me. I know it’s based on a stage play, but the writing and direction felt way too stagey and “theatrical” for me. Even some of the sets are made to make it look like they’re on a stage, which was an interesting artistic piece but just didn’t work for me. And to no surprise, this gay holocaust movie can be emotionally draining.
