Holy crap! This is the best Lifetime event I've ever seen. It's based on a short story by Stephen King, it has all of King's elements but what surprised me was how graphic the fucking thing is! It's a women revenge picture with a few nice twists. She's a crime - horror author, there's a horrible attack and there's a road to revenge. Maria Bello and Ann Dowd star so there's star power behind the acting, not models turned "actress", soap actors or reality stars making their acting debut. Mikael Salomon has directed some good tv (Band of Brothers, The Company) and some crap too (Salems Lot remake, Hard Rain) but fortunately this is a good one. Oh, and Miss I Love Rock and Roll herself Joan Jett has a role as a sympathetic bartender. How cool is that?
I fucking love Guns and Roses. Chinese Democracy was playing on loop all last night. Although evidently over-produced you can hear Rose coming down from the rush of it all.
'I feel sorry for you
Not Sorry for me'
And then as I fired up my car today , the riff to 'Mr. Brownstone' blasted from the speakers. Pure bliss, unadulterated nostalgia and raw energy. Wow.
Speaking of Nostalgia, I grew up reading King and the warm, frightening tales he spun throughout a career spanning three decades and then some. Nothing can stop Stephen King from writing. And I pray he keeps at it until he can't.
So, even now I occasionally find myself returning to a King favourite from…
I watched this as a huge fan of Stephen King, and yes it has a lot of King trademarks.
Maybe because I'm a King fan I kept expecting twists; maybe because I've seen a lot of films with this kind of rape revenge story I was expecting twists, I was slightly disappointed to discover the twist was THERE IS NO TWIST.
Quite keen to read the short story and find out when it was written as it may give clues to the subtext behind the lead character and her actions.
It's not terrible - Maria Bello is always a solid performer, and I must say this could be quite triggering for anyone who had been physically and or sexually assaulted before.
Having worked in publishing, I couldn't help but smile at the author/reading group/true thoughts on your novel conversations - VERY TRUE.
An ok film on a rainy night.
I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, I really enjoyed the performances particularly Maria Bello. As a writer, I could relate to how she talks to herself though I gotta say, this gal takes it to a whole new level. Bello's Tess, is a strong, quirky character and I admire her for that, but she seemed out of place in this rape-revenge thriller.
Rape is treated as just another plot device to inspire the lead character to pull up her bootstraps and even the score. I'm not surprised that the director, producers, and writers on this one are all men, because you can tell that they simply don't understand what a violation like this does to a woman.…
Stephen King's rape-revenge story found it's way over to Lifetime as an original movie. This could have been a perfect fit. The material is rather fitting for the channel. Plus Maria Bello and Joan Jett were brilliant casting choices. Unfortunately the results turned out pretty bad thanks to moments of ham-fisted directing, truly terrible performances from the rest of the supporting cast, and the mishandling of key elements from the source material.
The novella this made-for-TV film is based on told the story of a mystery writer who ended up with a fractured mental state after being brutally sexually assaulted on the road. The effects her near death experience had on her mind paired with her natural intelligence and penchant…
Had no idea prior to watching this was a Lifetime movie, only knew it was from a Stephen King story. There’s a couple of things that I’m sure was in the book (talking dead people) but overall it sort of felt like a Lifetime movie. Olympia Dukakis was under used.
When I heard that Big Driver would get a screen adaption, I wondered how it would fill in a full length feature film. With a running time of not even full 90 minutes, I was convinced in giving it a try (and because I would like to see all Stephen King adaptions, no matter how bad they are). This is a rape and revenge film with less brutality than I Spit On Your Grave or Last House On The Left. I liked the little gimmicks: the speaking automotive navigation system or the Knitting Club women. Maria Bello delivers a fine performance, but the movie is in its entirety too thin. I would have made a well short movie.
More Lifetime movie than King Adaptation, even though my guess is it's pretty loyal to the source material. Makes the cardinal sin of being Hopelessly Bland.
