”There's a terror of the mind that hurts even more.”
I like the idea of beat poets and jazz and Northern California. Some of the acting felt a little flat. It seemed the actors were playing it safe while playing these extraordinarily wild characters. However, I loved the mood and how philosophical it was.
Vegan alert:
-Red leather books
-Bacon fat
-Reference to dead cat
-Milk
-Reference to stew with beef and sour cream
-Dead otter
-Fish caught and eaten
Vegan points:
-Equating death of cat to death of brother
-Feeling sorry for the dead otter and other animals
“I start to scream because I know I’m dying but I dont want to scare Billie or anybody with my death scream so I swallow the scream and just let myself go into death.” - Jack Kerouac (Jean-Marc Barr)
Jack Kerouac's on the road & bottle again, 3 years being king of the beatniks taken its toll on his soul, hes tired and neuritic. So Jack hooks back up with Neil Cassady and gathers a few old friends to soak in the quiet life of California's Big Sur wilderness.
Not sure why its getting so much negative feedback. Visually and aurally beautiful. Jean-Marc Barr's great as Kerouac, one or two members of the supports not so great but they're serviceable, its about Jacks psyche anyway not theirs.
[Personal Reasons For Remembering]
Amazing stream of consciousness from Kerouac, put next to The Nationals soundtrack, what more ya need.
Unsurprisingly the source material doesn’t translate into anything much more than somewhat watchable. If I had ever achieved any level of fame, I think my post-success life would’ve resembled something like this, so I guess it’s good I’m completely incapable of doing anything worthy of fame. You do get exposed to a treasure of great lines directly from Kerouac’s novel, but even that feels like someone’s unenthusiastically dictating them to viewers.

A.V. Club review. I managed to avoid the Polish brothers for 14 years after enduring Twin Falls Idaho. Good times.
I had to re-watch this and I'm glad I did. It was hard to catch some of what was said the first time through because it was so easy to get caught up in the rhythm of the voiceover narration. And I went into it this time knowing that the Dessner brothers Aaron and Bryce of the band The National composed the score. The score really had an impact on me the first time through as it felt both new and familiar and now I understand why. I'm a huge fan of the band Bryce and Aaron are in and I've seen them live countless times because the entire band is so emotionally charged in that setting. I've also been…
Thought I'd try to write a review for this film in a stream of consciousness style and already that idea seems to be wasted here. I've always found it hard to dig into Kerouac's writing because sometimes it never stops and goes on and on and on and there's no room for breathing and way too many ands and not enough periods. But with this film I feel like his writing wasn't written for me or for you or for anyone but Kerouac himself. It was him as a vessel of words and he let them drip and trickle and sometimes they flowed without abandon and sometimes they meant nothing but more often than not they held strange meaning, meaning…
Could never bring myself to read it so I figured I’d roll the dice and watch it. Fuck. This movie made me feel.

Much like the film version of On the Road that was released around the same time, this is for the Kerouac fans - those very familiar with the source material.
This movie, much like the short novel, is an inside look at a true drinker’s mind, and how booze - when abused - can cause one to go mad. Make no mistake, the Kerouac in this film isn’t a good time having booze hound, but rather a neurotic who uses libations as an escape. And he pays dearly for it
