Birth of the Dragon sells itself as being the untold story of one of the greatest kung-fu battles between two of best fighters in the modern world. Why then, does it focus 90% of its time on a secondary white saviour character who has zero charisma and screen presence? Birth of the Dragon is a good kung-fu romp at heart but never wants to fully show the audience anything, until it has to do so. The comedy is a little off throughout, but that’s simply because Magnussen can’t and probably doesn’t want to carry the film. Simply put, this is a ”film” about Bruce Lee, without Bruce Lee actually being in it.

Birth of the Dragon really could've been something truly special with a much clearer focus and more fleshed-out characters, but for what it is, it's a serviceable martial arts drama with strong performances, entertaining fight sequences, and lush cinematography.
Asian girls are fucking cut tbh part 8
I had to go to the bathroom just to wash my face because I was about to fall aschleep because how forgettable this is
Action scenes are lit tho
Why does Bruce Lee sound like a Fillipino guy?
Very poor.
Based on the title of the movie, I was expecting a full insight into how Bruce Lee became the iconic figure that he is today. It's definitely not that! It's basically a character assassination of the great man. It implies that he was an obnoxious, bad mouthing douchebag, with a thuggish attitude and was extremely unlikeable.
The movie focuses way too much on what should have been a minor side character and his love story plus for some unknown reason towards the end of the movie it tries it's hand at comedy but fails dreadfully!!
A terrible movie, if you are wanting to watch a Bruce Lee movie then choose Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story.
When I saw the trailer for this movie it looked promising enough, but that's when I found out two things. First apparently some people saw it early and said the trailer was completely misleading and that it was horrible, and when I found out who exactly was directing it I was pretty annoyed. It's by that same guy who directed Spectral which was one of the worst movies I saw last year. Anyway so how bad is Birth Of The Dragon? Pretty darn bad which is shame because this could have been actually interesting, the acting in this movie.....my lord did they actually say that this is okay? The writing is so unnecessarily convoluted which it shouldn't be all I…
Having very low expectations going in, I was surprised that I actually enjoyed Birth of the Dragon. It certainly has problems; there is an overalliance on a certain side character, there are some scenes that are drawn out, and it never really knows what it wants to be, but it moves at a nice pace, the fight scenes are great, and the performances all around are rock solid, making for a fun take on this story, and I think it's worth a watch.

“Then one day I wandered into Chinatown and I discovered kung fu and that's how I met Bruce Lee."
Hey screenwriters, can you re-write that please.
"I'm gonna tell you a story that's all about Steve. Yeah. good old Steve. Steve was a cool dude, who trained with Bruce Lee, apparently. You know Bruce Lee right? That uninteresting guy who knew some sort of epic fighting style. Nah, you don't care about him. You want some Steve. What? Did you come to see Bruce Lee? Too bad. This movie is all about Steve."

Me, during the first 20 minutes: "Why is Bruce Lee such a dick?"
Me, about 20 minutes later: "Okay, now I understand why Bruce Lee is such a dick. He's young, and brash, and will learn humility in the end."
Me, at the end of the movie: "Why is Bruce Lee still such a dick?"
And finally, me throughout the entire movie: "Where's Bruce Lee? It's like he's a supporting character in his own movie."
Philip Ng is Bruce Lee, teaching Kung Fu to white Americans. Yu Xia is Wong Jack Man, sent by Shaolin monks to challenge him in George Nolfi’s action-packed drama based on true events.
The story concerns Bruce Lee (Philip Ng) who is employed as a martial arts mentor and optimisms to be a powerful figure. When he gets a chance to battle Wong Jack Man (Xia Yu), a kung fu expert, he sets out to verify himself.
Philip Ng gives a reasonable performance in his part as Bruce Lee, the martial arts instructor who doesn’t show a great deal of determination with his character, while Xia Yu doesn’t offer much in his part as Wong Jack Man, the man who…
This biopic is just as good as the last Bruce Lee biopic!
The climatic fight scene at the restaurant superb and thrilling.
And the fight between Bruce Lee and Wong Jack Man - wow!
Really worth seeing on telly.
Day 22 of Junesploitation. Kung Fu!
I must admit I’m not a big Kung Fu fan, so I know very little about the event this film is built on. I doubt much of what is shown in the film is true.
I just couldn’t get interested in this story. I was surprised by how much Billy Magussen’s character dominated the movie. The white saviour criticism is probably fair. Bruce Lee and Wong Jack Man are obviously far more interesting as characters, but neither gets as much attention as they should.
I don’t know a lot about what Bruce Lee was really like, but he isn’t really that likeable here. He seems to be a bit of a overconfident asshole in the film.
Philip Ng should be a superstar. That’s how I’m starting out this review. The guy is insanely overlooked as both an actor and martial artist.
With that said, Birth of the Dragon is a pretty terrible film raised higher by some enjoyable fight sequences.
The fatal flaw of this movie is its characters. While every other character is hollow and dull, Bruce Lee is made out to be an absolute arsehole with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I know he had an ego but I’m super shocked they portrayed him as this big of a dickhead.
The rest of the film is...serviceable. Nothing stood out as being particularly impressive other than the final fight sequence which is actually very good. Despite some ropey, unnecessary wire work.
A highly skippable movie.
Having not seen 'Enter the Dragon' and with limited knowledge about Bruce Lee, I cannot judge this film for its biographical merits or flaws. Judged only as a film in its own right, the film is one of the worst I've seen for quite sometime. The performances seem wholly cliched, artificial and insubstantial. The dialogue is poor, unrealistic and boring. Any action sequences, though physically impressive, quickly grow tiring and only present their stars showing off. I thought this film could have been entertaining by teaching me a part of history I knew little about. Instead, I finished the film knowing less about Bruce Lee than when I started.
The events leading up to and the match between Bruce Lee and Wong Jack Man -- which changed Bruce Lee into a new direction. The premise of the story was interesting. However, a Bruce Lee movie without Bruce Lee (brilliant fight choreography) leaves one wanting -- as such is this movie.
I went on a date with my gf at the time to see this. I have so much yet so little to say about this movie.
Nice biopic focused on Bruce Lee's combat with one of his masters. To demystify him a little. Before Tarantino.
Simpático biopic centrado en el combate de Bruce Lee contra uno de sus maestros. Para desmitificarle un poquito. Antes que Tarantino.
This isn’t even about Bruce Lee, it’s about some boring and lame white guy with a savior complex. I understand wanting to write a story about a young and arrogant Bruce Lee learning to be more humble after fighting Wong Jack Man, but holy shit they depicted him as way too much of a prick. Philip Ng makes for a great Bruce Lee, it’s just sad he was forced to act as a dickish caricature of the man he’s playing. It’s not as bad as Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, but still poorly written as fuck. The fighting is the only worthy mention here, thank you Corey Yeun! Would’ve been better to have watched a YouTube compilation of the fight scenes though.
