I was a little worried walking into this film. I haven't liked the other Italian neorealist films I've seen and was genuinely worried I wouldn't like any, but thankfully I did like Bitter Rice! And it wasn't completely bleak either! Wait, this is Italian neorealism, right?
While the movie does feel a bit muddled at times in both its presentation and themes, I still thought this was a great film. There are truly some powerfully good moments like the rice-field singing battle between Francesca and Silvana, the dance sequences, and the final scene with Silvana. The actor playing the army Sergeant looked just like Burt Lancaster which was also distracting!
I also have to mention the incredible camerawork and blocking. Both Antonioni movies I have seen I have also complimented on incredible blocking. Blocking is a total lost art in films these days, but these black and white Italian movies are great for it.
