I really thought this was going to bore me despite the theme that it treats that has always interest me a lot, but black and white films most of the times instantly put me to sleep for some reason lol, no matter the year or their genre. But that didn’t happen in here, not even five minutes in and things were already going to shit (in the good way). I think that it was pretty unique that the approach of the movie wasn’t just about the atomic bomb and the instant struggles it caused, but about it’s consequences on the lives of the people that survived. The whole context of the story revolves about this tragic event to give us a very great drama and even a little romantic story that turns out to be pretty damn depressing. Really liked it but would never watch it again because it’s sad as fuck lmao, pretty recommended tho.
If like me you have seen films like Grave of Fireflies or Barefoot Gen both of which are well done in how they tell us about the atomic bomb on Hiroshima you certainly need to see this one to make the experience of these two much better and shocking.

Shohei Imamura's Black Rain is without a doubt one of the most haunting films I have seen about the impact of the Hiroshima bombing ever since Alain Resnais's Hiroshima Mon Amour. Whereas Resnais's film shows us the perspectives regarding the impact of the bombing yet disguises it as a romance, Imamura shows us the damages of the war in such a haunting fashion to that extent I'm simply amazed not very many people know about this one. Imamura's Vengeance Is Mine happens to be a favourite of mine and seeing that I've only been impressed with what I have seen out of his body of work he may just as well be one of my favourite filmmakers.

Some years ago, I read an English translation of Masuji Ibuse’s novel about the aftermath of the detonation of the atomic bomb over Hiroshima, “Black Rain.” The imagery in the book was so stark and horrific that it was difficult for me to imagine a film of it being made. It’s astonishing that growing up in America you’re basically taught that the horrific, inhuman bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were essentially a win. You don’t really get to understand, or even empathize, with the sheer devastation that these events caused and how monstrous they were. They’re seen as wonderful victories, the good guys triumphing over evil. Black Rain is a movie that doesn’t necessarily confront that warped perception of reality in a direct way, instead doing it by humanizing the innocent people that were impacted by this heinous act, and the generational trauma that would linger within this community forever. Horrors of war and the atomic bomb seen through a different and allegorical scope. The focus of the story (both of the book and the movie) is reconstruction, both physical and spiritual. Sometimes, tangible irreversibilities are unavoidable. Kuroi Ame gives a bigger importance to the destruction of the soul than the demolition of urban and rural edifications, so the atomic bomb is the prologue, and then a tremendous collective character study unfolds.
