No greater example of the Monkey’s Paw than “and Jared Leto” rolling on the credits of this bad boy. You know he shot his two scenes on his own? Just set up a Sony Handicam in his pool room and improvised. Emailed two .WMV files to Villeneuve like “lemme know if this works.” Script wasn’t even written yet. That guy’s twisted.

For some context, the original is one of my all-time favorite movies, and the almost-three-hours of this wasn't nearly enough for me, frankly, for both the ways in which it very much is BLADE RUNNER and very much isn't. Just as much, if not a lot more, of a jawdroppingly gorgeous, absurdly portentous, meticulously designed hypno-drone than its progenitor, but this also upends its legacy in ways that will confound a lot of people and which I found highly rewarding. A person who might be a machine is swapped out for a machine terrified by the idea that he might be a real boy. A world we last saw oppressively teeming with overpopulation is now desiccated, nearly dead. Memories that made these beings closer to humans now render them slaves to that fabricated humanity. I'll probably end up watching this one into oblivion too.

(this is easily my worst review)
This film is one of the best looking and best sounding I’ve ever seen. I also love the themes it has going for it. But if it didn’t look the way it does, this would be quite the drag to get through for anyone (like myself) who isn’t ridiculously dedicated to this story.

I was way off baseline with Blade Runner 2049. “Not even close”, you could say. But the simple fact of the story revolves around love. I *loved* Scott’s original film. Obsession might’ve been a better word, and yet it was love for a twelve-year-old; numerous posters, DVD/Blu-ray editions, endless late-night re-watches under stormy skies – its world wasn’t enough for me, even though the dystopia of Blade Runner wasn’t exactly Oz. I felt the rain patter on my trench coat when I stepped foot in it. A completely innocent sensual dreamland. Theatrical, International, Director’s, Workprint, Final, doesn’t matter: it was Blade Runner all the same, and it sang to me. Roy Batty’s speech seemed…

About the future. About the life I can provide for my children. About the love I can give to my wife. About the comfort I can give to my students that they'll always have someone that'll listen to them, in spite of these times of devalued communication.
And then I see this film. And it reminds me, wrapped in the most beautiful and exciting gift wrapping imaginable, what it is to be human. And it forces me to find a new and fresh perspective on what we do with our time in this existence. It forces me to be aware of what you are, what I am, and of the beauty around us. Don't take things for granted.…
