my heart sank further and further with each scene but the final one left me completely devastated and made me hate humanity - a great mark for any movie
It's funny that for a character study on a teacher so exacting on grammar and vocabulary, the subtitles were so wonky on this. It's a little thing, but it would have really encapsulated the central mindset to have them live up to her demanding standards.
In any other film I wouldn't have picked up on that, but it speaks to how well Blaga's Lessons pulls you into her worldview that suddenly the appropriate use of language was at the forefront of my mind. It's a really effective perspective film, to the point that her gradual descent into horrific behaviour is completely believable. I didn't find myself questioning her behaviour until the very last scene, when the consequences of her actions finally hit like a truck. Wonderfully done.
AFF 2023 - #2
A Bulgarian character study about 70 year old retired teacher named Blaga. After being conned out of all her savings by phone scammers, her moral compass is slowly disintegrated after feeling let down by her fellow people and the systems of her country.
A pitch black film, and one of many that depicts the rot of capitalism and how it makes monsters of us all. Ballsy in how unsympathetic Blaga’s actions become despite being born out of a very sympathetic situation.
Eli Scorcheva’s performance is the lynchpin of this thing, a commanding work that you cannot take your eyes off of. Some nice visual language throughout even though what it has to say is quite obvious in the end. Perhaps not what I expected in some ways but it’s a bleak hammer of a film that’ll leave you feeling empty, in a good way. Rough ending, in the best way.
