  Reading Blame! was a manga that caught me by surprise, and made me look forward to each chapter.

  Blame's story is told to the reader visually since the manga doesn't have a lot of dialogue. Instead, the method of storytelling allows the reader to interpret what the story of Blame is about. The artwork in the manga is incredible, with every detail in each panel giving tiny details about the story and worldbuilding.

  The main character, Killy, is traversing through "The City" looking for the Net Terminal Gene, a gene that can restore the world to the way it was. While the panels are mostly Killy traversing to each section of The City, the artwork is incredible to see and…

  As a massive Blame! fan I went in expecting to hate this. I adored the studio's adaptation of Knights of Sidonia, but with something as distinctive as Blame! it's easy to develop your own idea of how an adaptation should go. While this isn't 3 hours of Killy walking around set to a soundtrack by Agraph I nonetheless really enjoyed it.

  I'm sure there are others who did hate it, and I won't try to defend it there because I definitely see why. A lot of the original's sense of scale, in the sense of both space and time, is gone here due to the decision to focus on just one settlement - you can't really have 800 hour long…

  One of the primary reasons Blame! is a highly praised manga is the surprising lack of narration. The reader is dropped into the dark cyber-punk setting blindly and must piece together everything visually instead of having a narrator spoonfeed the information to them. It's bold and refreshing. Unfortunately, this adaptation starts off with a long-winded explanation of the state of things. It's vague and carries an air of mystery but it still feels disappointingly unnecessary.

  Thankfully, the other main reason the manga is so interesting, the ingenious atmosphere, is carried over quite well. The lack of color gives the world a cold, lifeless nature, but the mechanical pipes and wires covering the surfaces mimic that of plants, twisting and turning…

  Some 2000+ years in the future, humankind is bordering on extinction, wiped out by an ancient massive automated city that keeps endlessly expanding its size via new structures, and lethally targets all humans as trespassers to be destroyed by the countless members of their robotic security detail. If you're like me and jump into Blame! knowing nothing about it (read a review months ago, sounded good at the time), it's gonna take the first half of the film till you figure out that premise I described in the first sentence.

  Anime Marches On!

  I don't think much of Blame!'s colour palette. Grey suited heroes take on grey machines, in mostly dark and grey environments. Damn the future is drab. There's a moment toward the end where everything is set on fire and instead of feeling the tension, I was thinking... Well... thank fuck for that, colour!

  That's not to say that Blame! doesn't look good. The art style is great, although the use of CGI appears divisive amongst Letterboxd reviewers, I thought it was a fine looking film, with some beautifully detailed environments. Would it have been improved with true hand drawn animation though? Yes, yes it would.

  Had you told me this was a segment of The Animatrix, I would 100% believe you.

  For years I had heard the rumblings that BLAME! (pronoucned "BLAM," like a child mimicking gunshots) was an unadaptable manga. I haven't read it, so I can't validate how accurate this is to the source, but the central story here is a basic one. Humanity is all but extinct, barely surviving in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi dystopia controlled by killer robotniks. A mysterious stranger is discovered while a few villagers are on an expedition for food, leading them on a quest to seek out a MacGuffin that could save the human race.

  I'm assuming the "difficult to adapt" aspect comes from the scale of this…

  Quarantine Movie Club Ranked

  Blame! is a manga I am not very familiar with, but from what I know now it seems like a relatively run of the mill Dystopian Future Tech Adventure. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but pretty much all the characters that inhabit it, or at least this movie of it, are weak. They don't offer interesting dialogue or perspectives, which is unfortunate because the Dub is filled with excellent deliveries. I just really wish they were for better lines.
