Oh my, Marian Dora is back at it again with two new movies, both of which I saw back-to-back at the BUT Film Festival during their world premiere. We first watched Das Verlangen Der Maria D. which I honestly quite enjoyed, but then… then it was time for Pesthauch Der Menschlichkeit. Which would translate to Plague Of Humanity, and yeah, that sounds about right.
First of all, fuck this guy. The movie opens with a bunch of animal cruelty. Sure, “they’re just insects”, but still. It serves no purpose besides shock value and it’s just like, dude it’s 2020, we’re not doing this anymore. (According to the credits this was shot in 2017, but that makes no difference, obviously).

Out of all the bizarre, brutal and mind-boggling films of Marian Dora, I find this one to be the most difficult to review. We’re presented with a bizarre scenario, the scenario becomes more bizarre and cruel as the movie progresses. It’s not Dora’s most shocking, that will always remain Melancholie der Engel, in my opinion. But the movie becomes extremely uncomfortable to watch in the thrid act.
The story appears to be about a man taking 2 rather mentally handicapped and/or unstable people on stroll through serene yet lonely landscape. One of the characters, a dwarf, mimics actions of which he sees. The woman in this picture seems to mostly be afraid of these other 2 characters, it is unclear what…

In all seriousness though, this is Dora's most visually sophisticated work. He has really honed his skill with cinematography and unique lighting colour palette to a master stroke. It may not be quite as extreme as Melancholie der Engel but the themes of mental illness and the consequences if untreated ring a lot clearer.

Mit Pesthauch der Menschlichkeit bricht Marian Dora mal wieder alle Grenzen. Grundsätzlich ist das nicht schlecht, meiner Meinung nach geht er aber in einigen Aspekten deutlich zu weit.

Im Grunde hat der Film keine wirkliche Handlung, denn er handelt von drei Personen die durch die Natur spazieren und zum Ende hin eskaliert das Ganze.
Erstmal das Positive: Marian Dora hat einen besonderen Stil in seinen Filmen etabliert und auch in diesem Werk gibt es wieder den abgefahrenen Mix aus Brutalität und Schönheit. Ohne jeden Zweifel der gewalttätigste und, man kann es nicht anders sagen, abstoßendste Film von Marian Dora. Und wer schon ein paar Filme des deutschen Ausnahmeregisseurs gesehen hat, der weiß, von welchen Maßstäben ich da spreche. "Pesthauch der Menschlichkeit" reisst Grenzen ein, verstört über alle Maßen und zeigt Bilder, die wohl eine Zeit lang im Kopf bleiben werden. Vor allem diverse Tiertötungen könnten noch für Aufruhr sorgen, ich hoffe inständig, dass ich hier dem Regie,- und Schnitttalent Dora auf den Leim gegangen bin. Doch Dora ist kein stumpfer Gewaltabfilmer. Einmal mehr kommt auch hier sein einzigartiger Stil voll zum Tragen. Possibly Marian Dora's funniest film, if only because of the literal depiction of a pairing where a woman is the caretaker of a completely useless man who can't communicate and constantly shits himself.
Like yes that's basically your typical hetero romantic relationship, but It's just hilarious that on so many levels It's that blunt about it. The girl in said pairing is so fragile and timid that she shouldn't be involved to begin with, and she's reprimanded for any resistance or struggle despite that, whereas the man is aggressively but innocently curious about this woman's body to the point that consideration for her feelings and safety are completely disregarded.
It's almost comically upfront until the movie descends so far into hell that the only way it can be funny anymore is if you're laughing at how disgusting it gets.

Nach das Verlangen der Maria D. war ich ja doch etwas überrascht. Nicht nur von der Qualität des Materials was die Bilder angeht, sondern auch von der fast schon „romantischen“ Darstellung. Auch wenn der Film nicht ganz auf "Pipi-Kacka" verzichten konnte und einen miserablen Ton im Effektbereich aufweist. Trotzdem blieben die Bilder und die Stimmung in Erinnerung. Der Pesthauch verdirbt alles. Was wie ein schöner Sonntagsspaziergang beginnt, wird zu etwas verdorbenen. In wunderschönen Bilder erleben wir die Zerstörung der Unschuld. Langsam verrottet alles, wie die toten Tiere im Film. Alles wird schmutzig und verstörend.
Es gibt keine Dialoge, nur eine Figur spricht ab und an. Keine Stimme aus dem Off. Wir werden alleine gelassen mit dem was wir sehen. Müssen es reflektieren und verarbeiten. Der Film macht mit uns ZuschauerInnen etwas. Er löst Gefühle aus. Sehr viele Gefühle.

One of the few films that have legitimately disturbed me. Nothing can really prepare you for the final act of this film, it is genuinely one of the most brutal and disgusting things I have ever seen. It especially hits the viewer as the majority of the film is actually relatively calm, making the final act all the more shocking.
Marian Dora again has beautiful cinematography and music combined with scenes of extreme brutality, a common theme amongst his work. It works to make things all the more shocking.
I would rate this movie slightly higher, however the real-life animal abuse here is abhorrent. Whatever your opinion is on real animal death for film, (personally I am against it), anyone…

Not quite the no-holds-barred, straightforward bombardment of filth & violence that the one eloquently written German review getting all the weirdos hyped up suggested.
After a very insect-crushing-heavy opening, there's a whole portion that could be described as Dora's Lav Diaz film, with extensive scenes of the three characters walking in and out of the frame, lo-fi drone shots and good amounts of raw digital nature footage.
As to be expected, things are headed for a grizzly humiliation- and abuse-scenario, this time played out in a particularly provocative constellation, but even as this stuff comes fully to the fore, quick cuts and extreme close-ups suggest more than is actually seen, plus the over the top dubbing keeps everything from become all… -
The summary says it best: a journey into the "abyss of human existence." This abyss is where innocence gives way to curiosity, curiosity gives way to power, power gives way to violence and violence ultimately gives way to destruction.
Pesthauch der Menschlichkeit is a savage piece of filmmaking that is almost without comparison. In a recent interview, Dora noted how this film portrays the power humans laud over creation and how the future should hold systems of oppression as taboo and socially unacceptable. It is without nuance or depth of character, which is a criticism that has been heaped upon all of Dora's works.
