in a similar vein to “gone girling yourself” i’m proposing “blue jasmineing yourself” where you go to parties and extensively lie about your life until someone tries to marry you and you have a nervous breakdown, chugging vodka. sally hawkins is there.
Gets better as it goes along, but begins terribly, with a lot of the sloppy, careless writing that has characterized the Woodman's more recent output. Given how frequently Allen flashes back to Jasmine's life before her husband became a Bernie Madoff-like disgrace, the amount of exposition he stuffs into the first 10 or 15 minutes is curious and unnecessary. And as with Whatever Works and Cassandra's Dream, the humble class is treated broadly and inauthentically: Does Allen not realize that Ginger's two-bedroom apartment in San Francisco is miraculously spacious for a single mother of two who bags groceries for a living? And he's very lucky to have an actor of Bobby Cannavale's caliber to redeem "Chili"; with his ridiculous hair and wardrobe, he could have been "Scumbag X" in Hollywood Ending, but Cannavale gives him humor and soul.
But as I said, it gets better. Blanchett is terrific as advertised, and the ending is admirably tough.
Though Woody Allen has limited his on-screen performances in recent years (he’s only cast himself once since 2006’s “Scoop”), it’s never been more obvious that the bespectacled iconoclast appears in all of his films. For Allen, the movies are not a place to escape but rather a place to reflect and refract, his characters offering a kaleidoscopic window into their creator’s kvetching soul.
Over the course of Allen’s 50-year career, he’s evinced a remarkable, Zelig-like capacity to bend any genre to his will – the only thing less believable than the fact that “Sleeper” and “Crimes and Misdemeanors” were made by the same man would be the idea that they weren’t.

Here's why Cate Blanchett's performance in Blue Jasmine is one of the best of all time.
Blanchett, like her character, is constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but her oeuvre is full of fireballs of humor, touches of consciousness, and an exquisite amount of grief. On the surface, Jasmine appears to be a reckless and spiteful woman, but Blanchett delicately peels back the layers of the character and reveals that she harbors guilt and sorrow resulting from an uncontrollable illusion. It's a mind-boggling jumble of antithetical moods, voice-level switches, and indirectly communicated emotions, all of which are spot-on. Her ability to deliver and exhibit a never-ending list of venomous insults, martini-soaked monologues, and escalating fluctuations of emotion with dead-on precision is absolutely compelling and captivating. It's unnervingly peaceful yet utterly insane.

Woody Allen proves a nervous collapse can be fun with the right actress. Jasmine, a vapid upper-Manhattan socialite, is forced to relocate to San Francisco and move in with her sister after falling into public disgrace, and in the process of trying to rebuild her life goes insane.
Rarely does a Woody Allen movie come out that cuts as deeply as Blue Jasmine. It has its finger on the pulse of contemporary life in a way that's totally disarming. The characters live in the immediate world. In moments they even seem slightly ahead of the curve.
It's hard to consider the success of Blue Jasmine without considering Blanchett's performance. She is the movie and appears in all but a few…
