Chemistry between people is such an elusive thing. I don't think it is something that can be forced into existence, but I do believe that circumstances can be created for it to flourish. In life it's up to chance, in art it's up to talent.
Blue Jay's writer and director provide the perfect tools for their two protagonists to shine, to charm each other and by proxy to charm us into giving a damn. In just 80 minutes, Paulson and Duplass give us two characters that you know the minute you see them. Through their interactions you feel their shared history, their faded longing that is rekindled, the weight of their present alleviated for just a second by the tenderness…
"There's nothing wrong with my life. I should be happy. But there's this sadness and I don't know where it comes from."
A lovely, melancholic stroll down the love that coulda, shoulda, woulda. If you are on a strict - one romantic movie a year diet, make sure that this is the one.
This recent TIFF I started to notice a trend emerge. Out of the 23 films I saw, probably half a dozen were produced by Amazon. These were the smaller films that I ended up loving, and it made me think that maybe the studio / theatrical distribution system was finally beginning to crack. One night when out for beers, my Norwegian LB buddy ( or I should say Norwegian LB buddy that was at TIFF, as I have many Norwegian LB buddies ) Thomas Ringdall effused about a little film he had just seen that day, Blue Jay. Lise had passed on it for our picks, as she noted it was a Netflix production, and would soon be available.

I wasn't expecting for this one to hit me as hard as it did. Cried a little, smiled a lot, I loved it. Sarah and Mark have amazing chemistry I hope they make more movies together.
“I fucking hate love. I loathe the hope it allowed to fester in me. The glimmer of life where my future was not just my own. I hate loving her.”
- A. Giannoccaro
A brilliant piece on love, nostalgia, what could have been, and what should have been. Emotional as fuck. Dialogue and chemistry breathing with life. Beautiful photography.
Mark Duplass is a genius. A genius that can act at that. Seeing Sarah Paulson starting to crawl her way out of that TV-cocoon is just magnificent. A few more of these, and she'll surely spread her wings and turn into that beautiful butterfly she deserves to be.
One of those movies that really make you appreciate that Netflix subscription.
no but there was a reason i didn’t let myself watch this for years and it’s because it absolutely shatters my heart so what now
I want someone to sing and dance to Annie Lennox into the early hours of the morning with me 🥺
here again for of my gf (real) amanda, no one is surprised at this point pls
Blue Jay feels like a nice, unplanned day trip. With a loose script and powerful actors, the film manages to stay strong from to start to finish with intense emotional shifts throughout.
Beautiful. Beautifully, beautifully made movie. Very honest, raw and human. Hit a lot of rough spots but I also feel bad for the ice cream.
Incredible film. I loved SO much about it, that I will summarise by saying it was a completely brilliant piece of work and I am going to make it a rather sensational double-bill with Blue Valentine one day.
