One of my favorite horror sequels and favorite movies of the 00's. Watching this movie is like if Taco Bell Quesadillas grew on trees, or were secreted from trees and had hallucinogenic properties in the spicy cheese which wasn't really cheese but some kind of sap because they weren't really Taco Bell Quesadillas but instead some kind of seed pod or lure for organisms which might eat Taco Bell Quesadillas extruded by a tree that is either symbiotic or carnivorous but is that a question of degree rather than kind?
If people believe something enough, isn't it real?
In Christchurch, where I live, bad things happen. Underneath a happy facade, overflowing with tourists, one can feel the history. The land on which Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme bashed their mother to death with a brick in a sock is shadowy, even in bright sunlight. You can walk there and feel something, history, underneath it all. It is equally as easy to wander the city streets post-earthquakes and sense a completely tangible paranoia. How can a road be schizophrenic? How can trees have split personalities? I may not believe in witches (not in a literal, magical, supernatural sense) but I do believe in the concept of haunting (being haunted by history,…
I love the BW movies and decided to rewatch all them this weekend because hello fall! Due to some insane greediness, this poor sequel came out way too quickly after the first movie and it never really stood a chance, but it’s still good in spite of what all the haterzz might say.
I understand and even respect the decision to forego the found footage aspect because there was no way the same magic would be captured, especially with this coming out so soon after the first one. There was so much hype around the first movie. So much. Like, if you were around at the time, then you know what I’m talking about and if you weren’t, I don’t really…
i really want to say something insightful about how movies are almost always somehow about movies & this is kind of abt how capitalism commodified the first movie & hollowed it out removing the original emotional content & trauma from the events that happened and superficializes them to sell them again & then a witch has psychedelic revenge on them, but mostly i am really happy that i've finally gotten over my arrogant young self who would've looked down her nose at 00's era nu metal horror, but now i totally love it & because i let it go this movie gave me a goth girl AND a wiccan girl in the same movie & i felt very at home.
Being that The Blair Witch Project is one of my favorite films of all time I find myself rewatching this sequel every half decade or so.
My mission in these rewatches is to hopefully find anything enjoyable about this movie.
Well you have failed me again Book Of Shadows!
See you in 5 years.
Is it weird that Joe Berlinger made 3 documentaries about how liking horror movies and metal music doesn't make teenagers violent psychopaths and then he made this movie that states bluntly that liking horror movies and metal will probably turn teens into violent psychopaths?
Honestly coming off how the original took the world by the nipples and twisted there was no chance, no chance in hell, a sequel was gonna live up to expectations
And it doesn’t.
I still dig this movie though.
Book of the Shadows is a strange movie even by the standards of its franchise. It’s almost impossible to understand unless you know that it was originally intended to be a satire, but was later recut as a more conventional horror film. It has the bones of an innovative sequel, but almost none of them are visible under the weight of the unnecessary additions.
The plot follows several young tourists visiting Burkittsville, the location of the events of the original Blair Witch project. As in real life the movie has become a media sensation, and each of the group has different motivations for the trip, from wanting to improve the image of Wicca to simply profiting off the film through…
Miserable. One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. God. Commentary will drop tomorrow
Can I just start this by saying I was completely livin’ for the goth girl. There was an element of ‘so bad it’s good’ to this but it was a bit of a mess. I kinda just lost interest and it felt way too long. Don’t even try to compare it to the original, that was one of the scariest movies of all time. It is what it is.
