Ever met that person at the party who is really fun? But then he starts being annoying and you're like hey man pull it back. Then he's fun again and you're like this is cool, so you tell him. Then it gets to his head and he starts being annoying again.
Now imagine that person is a movie.
Joe Carnahan's Boss Level offers a premise we've seen countless times before, a retired special forces soldier tries to escape a never-ending time loop that results in his death. It's a premise that many have understandably got tired of. Yet I love it, time and time again these storylines have proven to be some of my favourites with Palm Springs, Edge of Tomorrow and Source Code being some of the best of the decade. Now Boss Level has come to join them. Throwing you straight into the action, offering an immense about of fun and some pretty enjoyable kills.
This is Grillo’s film to carry, and he pulls it off with a combination of brute force and light charm that…
Each morning a man comes for Frank Grillo,
Attacking him as he wakes on his pillow.
With all the attempts,
It'll start to make sense,
So he'll learn to go in for the kill-o.
Surprise, surprise, cheap glib macho dogshit from Joe Carnahan. The only thing good about this is that it's somehow not as odious as STRETCH.
Frank Grillo is the Boss!!
Boss Level is the most Grillo of any Frank Grillo movie I’ve ever seen. He is in almost every scene. You get to watch him die over 150 times because Boss Level is the action version of Groundhog Day.
With so much focus on Grillo, the supporting players don’t have a lot of opportunities to make an impact. However, Mel Gibson does a lot with his limited time on screen. He even makes fun of himself. In fact, his character is probably based on an exaggerated version of The Real Mel Gibson.
Overall, Boss Level is action done right. It has a lot of action, gore and some comedy thrown in. It is a Joe Carnahan film that’s more Smokin’ Aces than The Grey. Recommended to all my action junkies.

A retired special forces officer is trapped in a never ending time loop on the day of his death.
Joe Carnahan is attempting to offer up his fresh spin on what feels like an overly familiar concept. I say that with hesitation at this point because it does feel like recent efforts have proven me wrong. From The Map of Tiny Perfect Things to Palm Springs, the idea of being stuck in the same day over and over keeps working for me. Maybe this is just secretly my favorite genre, but it could also be that these filmmakers keep providing entertaining rides. This movie was pure entertainment, and it turned out…
Another movie that I only knew of its existence because of people in here logging it and reviewing it. The reception though was a bit lukewarm, so I didn’t know what to make of it. However, someone mentioned Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong and Mel Gibson was in here, so that finally lead me to look for this and watch it ASAP.
And first of all, can we talk about the fact Moviepass will never die, once you think it has died, it pops up in the form of a countdown that all the sudden doesn’t go nowhere or the opening company credits in a movie. I guess its clear they are the true parasites.
Moving on to the movie, this…
Big bottom of the Walmart dvd sales bin energy. It’s not "bad" bad and would’ve even been good if Frank Grillo didn’t narrate every single little task he performs on screen like we’re in a goddamn nature documentary. "And now if you’ll direct your eyes to the very center of the frame you can see me, Frank Grillo, in my natural habitat busting some dude’s nutsack wide open - as I tend to find myself doing each morning while enjoying a nice cup of coffee" like bro, I’m WATCHING you do that shit RIGHT NOW, why treat me like some kind of visually impaired toddler with this Ugandan video joker routine but minus the fun. Know what else would’ve been…
I was on board with this clearly entertaining yet fatuous film until it established that every interaction in the Chinese bar occurred deterministically. This got my mind reeling with nettlesome nitpicks, and that pretty much preoccupied me for the rest of the viewing. Gratuitous as this fixation may be for a purely fun action film like this, I just kept ruminating on the unspoken rules of this world:
After Grillo’s Roy dies, does he wake right back up? Does he get sleep at all? Doesn’t he get exhausted? Doesn’t he need rest to remember the day before and process information? Is he human? An avatar in a video game simulation? Can subjectivity subsist in a predetermined simulation? If Roy is…
Aber was solls, Ihr seht mich in…
