It's 1984, and Michael Jackson is king - even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Here we meet Boy, an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky (who thinks he has magic powers). Shortly after Gran leaves for a week, Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of the blue. Having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy comes face to face with the real version-an incompetent hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before. This is where the goat enters.

“Think you can handle having The Incredible Hulk for a dad?”

I’ve always thought drama works best when it’s used as a reprieve from comedy– nothing makes an emotional moment hit harder than having it come when you’ve opened your heart expecting warmth and laughter, and this movie is proof of that. It’s beautiful, nostalgic, wondrous, fun, and funny until it makes you settle into the reality of its characters and breaks your heart. I love this movie so much. Taika Waititi is a gem.

Short, sweet, and technically flawless. Would easily be a 5/5 but something about it just didn't stick as much as I would have wanted it to. It was like really good chicken without any sauce (I sound like an old man, what the heck).

Ashamed that I'm just now seeing Taika Waititi's 2nd feature. But I finally did and really liked it. Was expecting a film that was perhaps more grounded than Hunt for the Wilderpeople but I found it to be very similar in tone. Very funny and moving.
Like the look of this film over Wilderpeople. Adam Clark's cinematography is gorgeous. He doesn't seem to work much in features. He should.

Just so gosh darned lovely. Takes a detailed father/son dynamic and places it within an equally meticulous examination of small-town space. Moving and warm and inviting.
