  i will never forgive Spielberg for not calling this movie SALMON FISHING IN BERLIN.

  but it's very good. if there's any movie at NYFF that *should* have been written by Aaron Sorkin... not that the Coen bros whiff, but this involving portrait of moral equivalence might be a touch too genteel where it could use a strong punch to the gut. though i'll admit i'm still wrestling with the wealth of contradictory information (visual and expository) that we're given in the final scene.

  think it was dargis who pointed out this great quote from john le carré: "for how long can we defend ourselves by methods of this kind, and still remain the kind of society that is worth defending?" and though the literal 'methods' may have changed the call for humanity remains the same. it's important that this is a series of backroom conversations between ordinary people, and that hanks' donovan is capable of shaping them to his goal not because he's a particularly great lawyer/negotiator but because of a basic conviction in decency. hokey and reductive, sure, but effective all the same.

  “What’s the next move when you don’t know what the game is?”

  A Spielberg movie about the Cold War led by Tom Hanks, not to mention Mark Rylance’s great performance. I’m just not allowed to dislike it.

  It’s such a beautiful looking well written movie. It is in fact a bit slow but nowhere near boring.

  Action!: The Caps Of Mr. Spielberg

  Back on 2015 when I watched this movie for the first time I could have very well see how Rylance's Oscar win was justified; but after this rewatch its objectively clear Stallone was victim of a conspiration, the man was robbed big time. Maybe its because his "stare and quite" acting has become pretty much a trademark of Mark or something, but the man barely did anything on this movie. He was just... there.

  With that out of the way, this is still an engrossing spy drama by Spielberg. Its a testament to the film not even once (okay, maybe by the final act) I looked at my phone. Most of it its due…

  Really well made film, beautiful but not groundbreaking, with some great political awareness in the beginning that ultimately falls out by the end.

  Bridge of Spies is strongest when it's doing its belief in principles vs. pretense of principles thing. Tom Hanks stands by the ideals America was founded on, but the politicians and other government figures around him merely want to uphold the facade of those principles but violate them in secret whenever possible. I really love principled characters (one of the reasons I enjoy Captain America so much) and Tom Hanks does a great job with it. One of my favorite scenes…

  All I have to say is WOW!

  Going in, I was very intimidated by both the runtime and the complexity of this story. I was worried that if I missed one line of dialogue, I would get confused on the whole thing and I would just end up hating it. I was worried from the runtime that looks a lot longer than it feels. But damn, Spielberg really did an excellent job. Having now seen them all, Bridge of Spies is my second favorite Spielberg movie from the past decade.
