[romance, gendered social norms, repression]
Love as creation and destruction, health and sickness. Lean captures all of those terrifying little "oh shit" moments that occur when love just works.
The perpetual motion and violence of the train station setting/atmosphere is a fascinating motif (reminds me of the End of Time zone in Chrono Trigger), and Lean uses its propulsive nature as a driver of conflict and metronome for editing and shot selection.
Though I'm not normally a fan of extensive VO, I feel that in this particular case it deepens Laura's (Celia Johnson) characterization in that it helps to flesh out the dichotomy of stakes between her and Alec, and how so much more is expected of her as a married woman.
