Die Abenteuer von Brigsby Bär, בריגסבי הדב
(I don't consider anything in here a "spoiler" per se because it's not a twisty or very-plot-driven film, but I do talk about some of the stuff that happens in the second act of the movie, if you're real wary.)
I think this might be my favorite movie of the year so far.
I'm glad I had known that the tone of the movie wasn't going to be wacky or Good Neighbor-y going into the film, because I think that would've colored my expectations differently. It's none of that, although Mooney's character has the delivery and tone that any of his Good Neighbor characters would, which makes even his most sincere lines funny but never at the sacrifice of his…
Brigsby Bear is such a confusing thing that exists. Not the storyline, that could not be simpler, just the actual purpose of this film, the tone of this film, the voice of this film, I mean what is the point?
It’s something that, on it’s surface, comes off as a passion project, as something that was so carefully thought out and had a lot of heart put into it. But once you actually watch you realize there isn’t an ounce of personality in it’s filmmaking. While enjoyable and sorta funny in the moment, Brigsby Bear is the most boring high you’ll ever have.
the concept could easily fall apart with any other director and any other cast, but it has such a huge, powerful heart at its center and the performances are so unbelievably good that it just works. it would be so simple to make james the butt of every joke because of his social awkwardness and inexperience, but instead the character is treated with the sympathy and compassion he deserves. i'm so happy i watched this, i kept awww'ing out loud and i almost cried at one point. if you have your doubts about seeing this because it doesn't sound like something you'd enjoy, ignore them. if you love movies & the power they have to affect our lives, you'll love this.
Who do you think would win in a fight, street rules apply:
Brigsby bear vs Paddington bear?
As much as I love Paddington my money is on Brigsby. That bear would cut a bitch.
Seriously though this was amazing and I loved it. A quirky coming of age indie that's heartfelt and warm. And honeslty I was not expecting to laugh and then get teary eyed. Anyone who watches can connect with the fact that all of us have all felt alienated or awkward at times. A charming lil film.
I don't think this has ever happened to me, but ten minutes after watching Brisgby Bear and thinking back on how lovely it was, I burst into uncontrollable tears on my walk home. Handily one of the most complex and life affirming films of the year and proof that sometimes that the world is not a cold, dead place. It's also dope as shit.
