Broken City is a really generic but surprisingly enjoyable political thriller, with very little politics but some good crime shenanigans. It has a really solid Hollywood cast, Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jeffrey Wright, Barry Pepper, Alona Tal and Kyle Chandler, and some decent photography. Wahlberg punches people and doesn't seem bothered by much, Crowe is sleazy and slimey even when he makes political sense.
I wouldn't argue the film is especially good. But I enjoyed the 100 minute run-time. The film feels like throwback to the early 90s straight-up thrillers. It has a convenient plot and an unlikely conspiracy, but it is made with reasonable skill by Allen Hughes.
One final thing: I would have said a few weeks that it was inconceivable for a man to get elected in any country with hair as bad as Russell Crowe's wig in this film. Then Donald Trump happened. Shaken to my follicle-criticising core.
