Aside from Priss’s inexplicable hatred of boomers (she made pals with a couple late in BUBBLEGUM CRISIS), the biggest divergence this makes as a sequel is to tone down a lot of the 1980s aesthetic, while still being ungodly cheesy. Priss in general is given a bit less focus in favour for more of an ensemble thing, which works fine. But these three episodes don’t have much time past the first to spend on digression, mostly being plot focussed.
There’s a story out there that this was cut short of its full run (as both BUBBLEGUM CRISIS and AD POLICE FILES were before it) but I can’t believe that. One strength, as I said, it arguably has over Crisis is…

"In 1987, a straight-to-video series started called Bubblegum Crisis. Futuristic Japan, directly inspired by Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) (and Walter Hill's rock 'n' roll action oddity Streets of Fire (1984), which was much more successful in Japan than in its homeland). A story where mass produced robots nicknamed "Boomers" exist, only for there to be the problem that exists in most anime and manga stories, that they can go kill-crazy and malfunction all the time. Four female leads donned cybernetic power armour, dubbed themselves the Knights Sabres and over eight episodes in 1991 dealt with tasks even the A.D. Not as good as the original series (and the animation is a step down), but it's still pretty entertaining. I particularly liked the second episode with an advanced Boomer that has a human-level A.I. The big plus this has over the original is I think the characteristics of the four main girls are far more defined; they all have more well-rounded personalities. I also can't figure out why most sources claim the series was cut short due to legal issues, as the 3rd episode felt like a pretty satisfying conclusion to me. Sure, the series is way more lighthearted than the original, but I honestly can't see why any fans with an open mind couldn't find some enjoyment in this.

Yeah, people were right, it was a step down but fuck it, I enjoyed it. Though having another VA for Priss sure was off-putting at first, but she got the tone ALMOST right at the last episode. Almost.

If teenage boys decided to mix "The A-Team" with "Sex and the City", this is what they would get. Four hot 80s cyber punk princesses in robot suits solving crimes as freelance operatives that falls into the description of most 80s anime: fun, guilty, and with some unexpected depth.
Crash! is the sequel to the superior Bubblegum Crisis, go with that instead.
