A terribly cool, hip youth film that throws awareness to the winds of MTV rock and roll, and post Generation- X teenage wasteland fantasies.

Larong Krimen, 汉堡男孩的
Love this. By far Lav’s weakest, wich is expected since this was his debut and he was still figuring out different techniques and learning. Just love watching filmmakers evolve from something like this to A Lullaby To The Sorrowful Mystery.
Hours 70.617-72
After this experiment finished someone uploaded Burger Boys, Diaz's first feature film (although released between The Criminal Of Barren Concepcion and Naked Under The Moon) to Karagarga a couple of months ago and today the subtitles for it were uploaded so it only feels right that I continue on with this series.
Even just going off IMDB dates and not realising this was made before Conception this has a lot of hallmarks of a first feature. His penchant for long takes and wide frames to capture the melancholy of his characters isn't developed, it has a brisk pace that he would continue to implement in Naked Under The Moon and Hesus The Revolutionary but what's even more…
honestly kind of surprised by this one because it’s actually quite an awesome movie: funny pre-y2k hyper optimism vibe (imagine gregg araki but not gay and filipino), some actually funny characters and moments and even a few concepts which seem promising but usually are ruined by over-ambition or poor execution. director’s first features don’t have to be perfect and it’s clear diaz was still working out his style around this point because you can even see little cracks of it every now and then. it does kind of suck but for what it is I actually quite like it, hope this gets rediscovered in like 30 years and has a massive cult following and 4k restoration etc.
the 360p quality didn’t help loads aswell
i have no clue what was happening at points but i love it, this is weird and goofy and fun
interesting to see how his style has completely changed
Not at all the slight comedy this is sometimes described at, but an ambitious, freewheeling metanarrative foreshadowing a lot of Diaz's later concerns and even some of his signature shots. Not all of it works, but at least it is a good reminder that Diaz is, at heart, not a realist but a filmmaker of the grotesque.

a cult film without a cult, Diaz diving into pure camp. it's beautiful, it's flawed, it's everything i wanted
It's at least for me impossible to see this film as a piece on its own without the idea of what is to come from it, So instead of doing that my review will mostly be covering this as a piece of Lav Diaz's filmography. Where Serafin Geronimo suffers from a mix of bad writing and misguided direction this one only has the latter. Weirdly enough it tries to go over the problem of homeless children in the Philippines and the corrupt government trying to fix it but fumbling the money instead, that part of the film is both under developed and creates a big tone imbalance from the almost comedic although I would not describe it as that, tone…
'Yung script? Trip lang yun, tsaka 'di bale kung maibenta natin yung script. At saka commercial lang daw ang nabebenta sabi ni sir, 'di ba?'
