I personally despise motorcycles but this movie has François Civil and how could I say no to him? Well I couldn’t and I’m glad I didn’t because that leather jacket really suited him.
Had this on my watchlist for a while and I wish that while had been much shorter now that I’ve seen Yann Gozlan‘s Burn Out. This was a taut sleek French thriller gem among Netflix Originals.
To help his ex-girlfriend, a superbike racer with professional aspirations must act as drug courier for a local gangster. Gozlan keeps this as brisk and sculpted as the motorcycles: enough characterization and consequences to engage outside of the high-speed suspense, while steadily accelerating to the next shift in intensity. The action is more subdued than something like Lost Bullet, filming each chase with paperback-thriller punch and slick style, a new twist on the courier-route thrills each go-around.
Burn Out aims to be nothing more than a sturdy crime thriller with a nice sense of momentum. Maybe a high 3.5 than an actual 4, but I was really satisfied by how neatly this wraps up.
...and Rubber down
A fast paced action ride from Rotterdam to Paris, again and again. A little bit of Parisian underground is sprinkled between to make a compelling picture. A nice Netflix Exclusive!
A young semi pro motorcyclist is in a bind. His ex girlfriend, mother of his son, is in deep shit with a local gangster drug dealer. He's about to turn pro, works part time at his funky gig and now he's forced to make high speed drug runs for a couple of months to square off the debt. I imagined some Fast and Furious type of shit but this one had more depth and drama behind it. Some real tense and bad ass moments here. Real good. From Netflix.
Sometimes I come across a film randomly on Netflix that I enjoy. Most of the time it is an abysmal film that I waste my time on, but not always. In some cases I stumble upon a film like Burn Out. A film I actually like.
While not without flaws, Burn Out tells an interesting story to an amateur speed bike racer doing whatever it takes to protect his family. He works a job, trains, and works for a drug cartel seemingly every day non stop. The best part of the film hands down is the physical stress and emotional turmoil you can see in the main characters face. He wants to protect his child and his ex wife, but…
Nothing new on the streets. It’s okay and the rides are nicely shot but the rest was very mediocre.
