Look, I laughed a lot at this, and am admittedly more impressed with the commitment to the bit than anything. A gonzo American serial killer thriller (or Lemmiwinks Noir?) where a family man begins consuming his victims whole with his anus (yup). Plus, the directing is rather razor sharp and the third act is utterly wackadoo. Should this have remained a short? Maybe. But I’m glad they still went nuts and extended it to feature length.
The movie is definitely up its own ass at times, and that’s mostly intentional. No doubt that it makes for memorable absurdist genre fare on the late night festival circuit, although the central gag isn't nearly as funny or even as quirky as it needed to be for a feature length effort. Certainly earns my respect for its radical hook; I'll always delight in work where brave, challenging new voices emerge from the bowels of indiedom. I think Greener Grass sustained its peculiarities with more energy and momentum, but both films share equally deranged DNA and feature their creators in remarkable starring roles. 6.2/10
Butt Boy is at its best when its transgressive premise is front and centre. However what makes it work is that everyone is played completely straight. For a film about trapping people inside an asshole it is smartly done, in a way. It's a crude film, that reaches its grossest and best in the final act, but everything is conceived to be wrapped around a more normal film. It's mostly a slow paced procedural, for better and for worse. The visuals are also pretty good for the low budget, with some atmospheric lighting at times. Butt Boy is nothing but a curio, yet it's a decent comedy and kept me thoroughly amused.
🎶it started with a kiss🎶
Well it started with a prostate examination, and it went into interplanetary dimensions. A power/addiction you'd never think....
The cop has that always suspicious look, like piss holes in the snow eyes. I liked his character a lot.
Butt boy is bizarre, you'll laugh, you'll also scratch your head.
Films like The Greasy Strangler, Greener Grass and Butt Boy are keeping independent absurdist cinema alive.
Except the other two movies embraced the absurdity with light-hearted dark humor, whereas Butt Boy takes its barmy illogical premise seriously.
A rather dreary family man seemingly adopts an unusual addiction of stuffing all manner of odd objects up his butt. It starts with the TV remote control (if I recall correctly), and moves on to bigger things, including a dog, and then a child.
Strangely enough, the first half of the movie drags a little, as the novelty of consuming anything and everything anally wears off pretty quick. And our star 'butt boy' man isn't quite the magnetic presence you would hope to…
Reverse "Swallow (2019)"
As a movie about a man who sticks children up his magic asshole, this is oddly serious, like it tries to be a movie, when it's about a GUY WHO FUCKING STICKS A WHOLE ASS BABY UP HIS WHOLE ASS ASS! AND IT TRIES TO MAKE IT VERY SERIOUS!!! WHAT IN THE FUCK?!!
When we entered the poop dimension and we saw a Salò moment, the movie was a bit more fun, but it's so serious all of the time, and it's very mildly competent.
In short, this movie is ass.
