Ok, well, besides from the stunning cinematography that makes this one of the most beautifully filmed vampire movies with every scene, no matter how mundane, just pops up on screen, Neil Jordan directs this movie superbly as we sweep through every scene, adding not only dynamic value to the picture, but also maintaining the romantic and nostalgic tone throughout.
Artenton's much more vibrant and troubled energy gets amazingly blended with the sadness that comes mostly from Soairse's character. They both prove why they are some of the greatest actresses of today, especially Ronan, who brings so much gravitas and nuance to what otherwise might just be a…

Slightly less traditional than his Interview with a Vampire, this is similar in tone but I preferred this less campy and more thought-provoking bit of bloodsucking terror and intrigue.
Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan play mother and daughter vamps keeping their undead state a secret from the modern world.
That's all I'll say regarding the plot but what we have here is a sumptuous piece of feminist horror. There are plenty of unusual aspects to explore revolving around the mythology which was enough to suck me right into this world. Among all the great vampire films is Byzantium (2012), directed by Neil Jordan. Jordan’s adaptation of Moira Buffini’s screenplay and play entitled “A Vampire Story” is an engaging and compelling set of main characters and supporting cast. Jordan also used his experience from Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) to tell this dynamic, singular vampire film. Brooding, graceful, and strangely elegant, Neil Jordan's "Byzantium" is a welcome return to the vampire film for the director. While not as operatic as his "Interview of the Vampire," the new film is a rich, subtle, and pleasingly small-scale take the vampire myth.
Focusing on two disparate and dangerous women, "Byzantium" tells a modern story with spurts of flashback and history. The women are vampires, trying to eke out an existence as two sisters; but their backstory suggests a different relationship. This is an extremely interesting twist on the common vampire story! Byzantium is a slice of contemporary gothic; telling the story of a pair of female vampires trying to make their way in the world. The film is directed by Neil Jordan and so comparisons to Interview with the Vampire are expected and apt as the film explores many of the same themes, while still pulling new and interesting ones from the vampire mythology. The narrative is split between two time periods; the current modern day and the events that lead there.
