  Yet another film that I didn't know about till I stumbled upon this site. The feedback has been positive, so I've decided to try it out. While it's not the most riveting political thriller ever written, there are enough twists and turns to keep me invested. Despite some trite and basic discussion and criticism of Islam and the Middle East's religious and government systems, the film's screenplay and direction (which won big at Cannes last year) are really solid, and there is also some great dialogue.   I’m not too sure what to think of Boy from Heaven due in large part to the fact that it left me feeling very little at all.

  I keep seeing people describe this as “unconventional” and I’m quite bewildered by that tag. This is a pretty ordinary, run of the mill espionage thriller. The setting and the topics touched upon aren’t frequently explored in films especially ones originating from the western sphere. However, that wasn’t really enough for me to give this film a pass for being fairly bland and stagnant especially when it comes to the filmmaking.

  BOY FROM HEAVEN grippingly tells a complex story of political maneuvering between state & religious factions seeking the high vacant seat of power at the prestigious Al-Azhar. I can totally see why this won Best Screenplay at Cannes. Good performance from Tawfeek Barhom as the pawn being moved all over the chessboard. Wish it had a stronger visual identity but I was hooked by it throughout. An intense & fascinating thriller that gets a bit sluggish by the end but definitely worth a watch.

  captivating portrayal of the overlapping dimensions of religion, politics, power, and hypocrisy within an islamic state. really glad i got to see this one.

  really pleasantly surprised by this!! found myself completely enthralled by the chilling game of chess being tactfully played out before me. it looks great and does the whole slow burn espionage thriller thing very well and very believably, i only wish that they stuck with the title boy from heaven here as it’s by far the superior title

  Really quite good. I wish I was better informed on Egyptian and Islamic political and historical contexts to have a bit more to say about this film’s ideological project, but it’s well-acted, handsomely shot, and scathing in its critique of Egyptian political corruption and policing.
