why did god take phillip seymour hoffman while woody allen is still alive and breathing.. of all the crusty old men to take from us ..
Bennett Miller's fantastic Capote is a great example (out of many) that shows the brilliance of Philip Seymour Hoffman. May such an incredible actor - and from what I hear, an awesome person in general - rest in peace. I will truly miss seeing his name show up in the credits of future films.
Performances : 9.1/10
Story : 6.1/10
Production : 7.2/10
Overall : 7.47/10
I wasn't in love with this film, the story was pretty lackluster. Luckily Phillip Seymour Hoffman is in it, and boy does he steal the show. He takes on the role of Truman Capote in such a way that I honest to god forgot that it was Hoffman.
Watch this for his performance, if for no other reason.
At this point I will watch anything with Philip Seymour Hoffman's name on it and this I will never get tired of. Hoffman's and Collins Jr's performances are electric.
"Sometimes when I think how good my book is going to be, I can't breathe."
Capote showcases subtlety in the best way possible. The low-key cinematography and lighting, the contained performances, and lack of any flashy camera or editing techniques all work in the films favor. Quite ironic when you consider that Truman Capote wasn't quite subtle about his opinions or beliefs about himself.
Instead of painting Capote as a monster who lied and manipulated people into getting what he wanted or showing him as someone who we should sympathize for, first-time director Bennett Miller confidently aims for middle ground and succeeds in doing so. Capote comes off as a human being, albeit a troubled one. He nevery seems to…
The Philip Seymour Hoffman show. Outside of that not much of interest.

CW 17 - A Biopic about an author
Die Philip Seymour Hoffman Show. Auch wenn man sich nach kurzem wirklich immer wieder selbst daran erinnern muss, hier nur einen Schauspieler zu sehen.
Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance as Truman Capote is spot on, watch videos of the real life guy and you can really tell PSH prepared incredibly well for this role. Playing real world figures is a momentous task, let alone playing celebrity figures with such an iconic look, sound and feel to him. Although this really is not my favourite PSH performance, he totally deserved his Oscar win for it. His performance was honestly the only reason I wanted to watch this film, not a lot else going on here though.
The cinematography is so evocative of great American photojournalism from the 50s and 60s. IT ROCKS.
Hoffman is so good that halfway through I had to remind myself I was watching an actor. (9/10)
A great example of a solid American death row crime drama, that gets elevated by the superb performance of Hoffman.
A tremendous study of the human psyche and the fact that good and evil are often not so black and white.
The photography and editing at play in Bennett Miller’s films are uniquely his. I only wish he made films more often.
Shot on Cooke S4 glass, which looks stunning when paired with the 35mm negative format.
