Two Brits—inventor Hengist Pod, and Horse, a brave and cunning fighter—are captured and enslaved by invading Romans and taken to Rome. One of their first encounters in Rome leaves Hengist being mistaken for a fighter, and gets drafted into the Royal Guard to protect Cleopatra.

Carry On Cleo is one of the very best Carry On films, secondly only to Carry On Screaming in my personal ranking of the series. Carry On Cleo is when the series really hit it's stride. This was the era which saw the series making fun of other film genres. Carry On Cleo playfully lampoons the 1963 behemoth Cleopatra and even makes use of some of the sets and costumes from the "epic" Elizabeth Taylor film. Carry On Cleo has one of the strongest plots of the series. Its a tone of fun with many memorable scenes and jokes. The attempt on Caesar's life is one of my personal highlights. Carry on Cleo takes the gang and places them in a historical and hysterical setting: Ancient Rome during the time of Julius Caesar. Certainly a highlight of the entire series. Having access to abandoned sets and costumes from the Burton/Taylor Cleopatra production didn't hurt any either. Apparently, Burton and Taylor themselves were big fans of this too. Coming right after that movie, Carry On Cleo was a welcomed spoof.
Saucy and cheeky and Kenneth Williams is in fine hammy form as Caesar.

Went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole which ended at Kenneth Williams' Wikipedia page (I had started at Terence Rattigan's Wikipedia page), and after that brief look into Williams' life story my interest in his film career was piqued. I watched a short clip of Carry On Cleo on YouTube and knew I needed to see the whole thing, and it completely exceeded my expectations! Well paced and very funny and witty, and has made me a bona fide fan of Mr. Williams. I loved his cheeky and queer interpretation of Julius Caesar. I will absolutely be seeking out more Carry On movies.
The series is on a winning streak at the moment… This is easily one of the funniest Carry On films so far, but more noticeably, it's the also the most epic in scope.

2020 has barely began and plenty of events have occurred which would make a variety of people feel despondent, whether it be cheating scandals in baseball, the wildfires in Australia, earthquakes in Puerto Rico, political strife, etc. Me, there's also someone I know not feeling 100%; after a doctor's appointment it was something relatively minor that should be fixed with a prescription, but before that it caused some consternation. An uncluttered view of history concerning ‘Julie’ Caesar and “That Bird who runs Egypt”. If you’re ever in need for a mild haven from straightening political correctness turn to a peak-period Carry On, of which this is towards the beginning of that purple patch.
With leftover sets from that other Bird who ran Egypt (a.k.a. Elizabeth Taylor and the abortive attempt to film that version in Pinewood Studios) this film looks a treat with a script that moves at a lick and is played with plenty of zest.
The corn is high and the jokes familiar, but who cares when it’s this much fun.

Needed way more Cleo, of course. But gosh, I enjoyed that so much and it made me miss Asterix all the more. "These Romans are crazy." Especially since I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever heard the word "sestertii" said after reading it so often.
I adore Kenneth Williams. Which is kinda hilarious cos he totally unnerved me as a teenager, I didn't know what I was looking at. Whereas now I'm like "Ehehehe, I see what you're doing." Sid James not so much but that might change.

Carry On Cleo is often viewed as one of the very best entries in the Carry On series, with some even naming it as the best Carry On film. Carry On Cleo was one of the first films I had seen from the series and I get quite nostalgic whenever I watch it. Aside from this, Carry On Cleo is just a wonderfully British comedy and a very funny film. It's a film that's always a delight to re-watch.
