Ist ja irre - Mach's nochmal, Columbus
Having determined to watch all the Carry On films during the course of a year this was the last one on the list. It's bad reputation preceded it and it certainly lived down to my expectations. Loaded with a ton of stars whose work I love, the material just isn't there to match the quality of the performers. Having said that I'm glad I've seen it because it means that I never have to watch it again.
Carry On Columbus is an obvious, heartless cash-in and everybody involved clearly knows it. Nobody here actually thinks they’re trying to make a good film or bring about the rebirth of the franchise that nobody wanted. The fact that the only real regular that returns is Jim Dale after Joan Sims, Barbara Windsor, Kenneth Connor and Bernard Bresslaw all refused the parts they were offered, is evidence of that. Little did they know that a quick buck would have such a stain on their careers when it came to be widely cited as the worst British film ever made. It isn’t that by any means. It isn’t, for example, as singularly awful as Carry On Emmannuelle, but it is terrible. It’s essentially just a filmed pantomime with similarly low production values, devoid of laughs and directed by somebody who clearly doesn’t give a shit. It’s probably the most insignificant, forgettable film I’ve ever seen.
Or the other one that killed the series. Overly laden with innuendo (mostly from Julian Clarey) and cameos from actors (Mayall) that you wish had been given more to work with, this feels like it is trying hard but ultimately fails. Jim Dale doesn't do so bad though.
Let's just be honest about this and call a spade a spade, shall we? Carry On Columbus does not deserve to be put in the same bracket as the classic comedy series, and when I say this is worse than 'England', 'Emmanuelle' or 'Behind', you just know it's rubbish, don't you?
Well, what can I say? Where to begin? I remember the reviews describing this movie as a stinker back when it was released almost 20 years ago and I'm pretty sure that I agreed with those reviews when I saw it way back then but now, after seeing every other Carry On movie in the series, it just seems even worse.
Gerald Thomas directs once again and that's one plus point. Not that his direction is any good, god rest his soul, but it's nice to see the man who helmed the first picture in the series being there right to the very end. The fact that the end should have been about three or four movies prior to this…
The release of Carry On Columbus in 1992 came after a fourteen year hiatus following the poorly-received Carry On Emmannuelle. Though there had been several attempts made to revive the film series, each effort seemed to stall because of issues with the scripts or finding funding.
Series fans hoped that Carry On Columbus would breathe new life into the franchise and begin a whole new set of movies. While that clearly did not happen, it should be said that failure was far from inevitable. The film would parody two big-budget movies that would be in theaters that year - a strategy that had worked well for the series in the past. And though few of the original cast regulars were…

The first Carry On film for 14 years and the worst of the lot. By 1992 the formula was tired and there were much funnier things than a innuendo-filled parody about the explorer who discovered the Americas.
2/10
I can seen how for fans of the Carry On franchise Carry On Columbus is considered to be the nail in the coffin for the series, after Carry On Emmannuelle was the death rattle. However, once again, as someone who isn't the biggest fan of the series and only really casually watches and bears through a handful of them I don't HATE this film, or at least seem to dislike it to the extent that a fair share of people that I've seen the thoughts of do.
While I admit that there aren't a great deal of gags in the film that work, the majority of them seeming weak and tired - as if seen many times before and not…

And with that I've now seen all of the main 31 Carry On Films. This one is a bit of an odd duck as it's essentially trying to recapture old magic as the last Carry On before this was 14 years prior. The documentary I watched covered why this one was made and it was mostly an attempt by some money makers at the time to reboot the series but to also try and feature a bunch of new comedians that were up and comers. To say this is bad isn't quite giving it justice. It isn't great and it's a little sad as there aren't enough of the old cast to do it justice. Jim Dale does carry the…
