  Carry On Constable is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated films within the Carry On series. As with many of the early Carry Ons, Carry On Constable is a film with an enormous amount of charm to it. The plot is a lot of good fun and continues the Carry On tradition of lampooning a British institution, with Constable taking aim at the police force. The jokes come thick and fast in this film.   The Carry On gang play police men and women, and it all results in some good laughs.

  This is where Sid James joined the gang, although he plays more of a straight man to the buffoonery of his constables. The plot is secondary, more of a series of linked sketches, perfect for giving each character ample chance for laughs. The Carry On gang work very well as a team here, not one gets the star treatment, instead they all get to shine.

  Recommended for fans of the Police Academy series and anyone looking for a few good chuckles.

  Local locations, Hawtrey and Williams in drag, a quiet romance going on between Sid and Hattie in the police station - this is a solid entry in the series, without the postcard smut the series would become known for.

  Look out for an amusing bit from Miss Marple's Joan Hickson as well.

  some unusual pairings: hattie jacques and sid james, kenneth connor and joan sims - nevertheless really quite enjoyable. you can tell they haven’t entirely settled into their characters yet and the caricatures they become in the later films are yet to properly appear

  After the rather disjointed previous entry (Regardless) we are back with the more usual format focusing on a single profession, the of the police.

  Three raw recruits (Phillips, Williams and Connor) fresh for training school, together with on Special Constable (Hawtry), are thrown in at the deep end in the wake of a flu epidemic which has knocked out the majority of the experienced officers.

  As usual, but to a greater degree and as a result more annoyingly, the majority of the mishaps in which they inevitably become entangled come about as a result of misunderstandings, usually willful ones, on the part of their superiors, in this case Eric Barker as the Inspector and the slightly more understanding Sid James…

  Late last night I was deciding on what to view, and as the DVD collection of their early films was right besides me and this was less than 90 minutes, it seemed like a natural choice to pick this, and I won't be going through the series in any set order either. In addition, this was the first time Sid James appeared in the franchise.

  Sid James makes his Carry On debut and occupies a role that seems odd for him, that of authority figure (It's one he would occupy again in Carry On Cruising and Carry On Regardless). It seems miles from the resident skirt chasing scallywag of the series for which is so fondly remembered and closer to William Hartnell's Sergeant Grimshaw in Carry On Sergeant. In fact the whole thing is rather similar to Carry On Sergeant as it features a bunch of raw recruits who are rather inept but come good in the end. Along the way there are some silly names ( another Carry On film debutant), cross dressing, bare buttocks and Leslie Philips even slips on a banana skin.…

  Thought I’d best get back on these films! 

  Watched this last night and had a pretty fun time with it. I’d say this has been my favourite one since the first. Maybe because it goes back to that more classic style or a brutal general type figure in charge of some silly characters. 

  All the characters where fun but Charles Hawtrey’s character was my favourite. I had so many laugh out loud moments with his character. One of my favourite scenes involved him with a scooter but his reactions in general to people was very funny. 

  Honestly I don’t have loads more to say on this one. These films all kinda feel the same but thankfully I’ll say this was an improvement over the two that came between this and the first one. Looking forward to getting onto a couple of the more popular Carry On films!
