It's a strange mixed bag of a movie that hinges on one key question: Do you enjoy the comedy of Phil Silvers?
If you don't like his style of comedy, then you really won't like this, but I think it's a good fit for the Carry On series. On top of that I'm a big fan of the Phil Silvers show in general, after growing up watching Sgt Bilko's antics with my granddad.
The setting is another fun one, being of a moronic posh Englishman and his butler joining the French Foreign Legion.
Some of the jokes land well, and some miss the mark. Kenneth Williams is great as always, this time playing Commandant Maximilian Burger. Not enough Joan Sims though, and I'm still not sold on Jim Dale as any kind of lead in these movies.
