  cat soup is a story that needs to be deeply felt and not analyzed. it’s surreal and violent and off-putting at first but once you sink into this world you realize that this isn’t going to hurt you. everything is bizarre and off but it’s soothing. it’s sweet.

  I would go to the ends of the earth for my siblings. I would dive right into nightmares and swim through pain if it meant they were safe. so seeing this little cat fight so effortlessly through these shockingly violent places made me feel a weird amount of peace in myself.

  In a tumultuous exhibition of separated body parts and omnipresent death, Cat Soup is characteristic of a ravenous foraging into a drug-induced trance. Inspired by the work of manga artist Chiyomi Hashiguchi, known by her pen name Nekojiru, it's an extraordinary surrealist film that is thoroughly absorbing and full of motifs and striking Images which stream from all directions, and while it might be challenging to understand, director Tatsuo Satō has created an exceptional visual experience.

  It's undoubtedly experimental in its disposition as it follows an anthropomorphic kitten named Nyatta, as he traverses the land of the dead and is carried across an ocean planet in a small boat in an undertaking to reclaim his sister's soul. The animation is lovely, and the numerous and varied backgrounds are thoughtfully decorated to arrange a diversity of creative visual suggestions. It may ultimately be implying that a supreme being is merely entertaining themselves at our expense, but that’s just a modest guess.

  1st Tatsuo Satō

  This film very nearly made me cry. Very nearly, mind. Crying was something I culturally learned to stop doing at a very young age, and so I bottled all the feelings up. But sometimes they leak out at the edges, and I just about held them in here. Somehow, this surreal story of a little cat venturing out to find the missing part of his sister's soul really did make me melancholy, especially in the final few minutes. It started with the clock moving backwards, the apparent ills of the world being reverted by the sheer power of time. A wishful fantasy for anyone who wants the world to be a simpler past.

  Cat Soup or Nekojiru-sou in its Japanese title is a lot stranger than its own name makes it out to be. It can be best described if you gave a loony philosopher, who just happened to love cats, some drugs this short film would probably be the result of what they see in their high. A series of abstract ideas presented in such a bizarre manner while seemingly nonsensical is alluring in its strange nature. It is very difficult to make any sense of it or confirm it means anything, but that’s part of what makes this short film have such a strong impression in such a small amount of time.
