  showing up fashionably late to sundance but here we are 🤪

  this doesn’t quite stick the landing but i’d be lying if i said i didn’t have a good time. also just such a unique thing to make a movie about and i Personally think that they pulled it off. there’s a lot of argento in this but at the same time this feels like a very original take on the horror genre. i also think it’s so easy to go lazy with a low drone score but this one REALLY washes over you to add that extra layer of discomfort. would kill to watch this on the big screen at midnight.

  “you’d be surprised what the human brain can edit out when it can’t handle the truth”

  i had enough fun with this but it’s already losing steam the more i think about it. feels like the kind of midnight movie i’d see with friends and when exiting the theater we’d glance at each other as if to say “was that worth it? at this hour?” but none of us want to admit that it wasn’t. it’s a bummer because i really liked the vibes at first but eventually ambiguity just overpowers it and that’s never really been my thing when it comes to cool artsy horror movies. i’m not flat out saying it’s bad because this is definitely a film that some people will love, i am just not one of those people

  Censor is one of the best indie horrors I've seen in a long time. It's a full on retro, stylish and effectively skin-scrawling experience that explores the complexity of human psyche in the most "nasty" way possible. It's the type of horror that specifically caters to its core audience at the risk of driving away others who are simply not comfortable with its genre and slow-burn nature.

  Censor feels like the love child of House of the Devil and In Fabric, as it in a similar manner organically borrows the ethos and blood-soaked visuals of the VHS era, while retaining an identity of its own. As a story about a film censor who finds uncanny similarities between the slasher movies…

  A few interesting threads here: the concept of the video nasty as a process of bureaucracy, with censorship being dictated by government interference and influenced by tabloids. How the viewer is then seen as responsible and culpable for the images they witness, and also how this ties into personal struggle - the impact of a film can emerge past the static of the TV and manifest in real life. All of that is fine and good, but fuck, can we try literally *anything* else? I wish Elevated Horror was dead, but it's somehow still kicking, determined to exploit any intuitive premise and suck out the lifeforce and nuance until all that's left is TrAuMa and a typical "is she…

  David Cronenberg once said the censor occupies the role of the schizophrenic because their job depends on not knowing the difference between fantasy and reality. Here is a film that explores this cool concept, but ultimately fails to stick the landing. There's some cool stuff here, but a lot of these new horror movies are too self aware for my taste and whenever I watch them I'm always waiting to see if there is really "a thing" going on--be it supernatural of just genuine sickening depravity--or whether it's just a metaphor for grief or mental illness. This was mostly the latter.

  Thrills/Chills: the only frightening part of this movie was the absolute, terminal grimness of living in the UK.

  I adore a good ole psyche breaking.

  Painted in reds that feels like a metaphorical “blood on your hands”, Censor leaps out boldly with the assurance of someone who knows they can get away with murder.

  Niamh Algar delivers a full body performance that is polarizingly hypnotizing and distancing. The tension she conveys could be cut with a knife. Her fellow cast are all doing wonderfully as well, providing Censor with a well rounded grouping of performances which balances out a sometimes rocky plot.

  The most impressive and jarring element of Censor is its sound. The foley work is unreal, reminiscent in someways to Raw’s own foley work. I was thoroughly impressed from start to finish by that component. The…
