Lau Kar-Leung, of the great Shaw directors, was the one most concerned with the martial arts as a program of self actualization and so it was natural that, after he had established himself as a top director in Shaw's latter days, he'd make a Wong Fei-Hung movie. CHALLENGE OF THE MASTERS is exactly as good as you'd expect that combination to be.
Wong Fei-Hung, the most venerable and popular hero of Cantonese cinema, hadn't been seen on screen in quite a few years at that point. Lau made the interesting creative decision to focus on Wong's early training and initial adventures. Were Wong Fei-Hung a comic book character, I suppose…
