In theaters 3/6.
Chappie is getting brutalized by the critics and I don't get it, its undeniably a Neill Blomkamp film. The movie is action-heavy with relatively shallow performances, giant mechs driven by impeccable video-game inspired visual effects, and a dystopian Joberg setting. This is the formula people, get on board or GTHO the theater. Haters gonna hate, I guess.
I had a lot of fun with Chappie - it's like a cross of the childish wonder of Short Circuit with the themes of Robocop with the misfits of Doomsday with the action and visuals and lite social commentary of other Blomkamp films. It's great, and unique, and technically flawless, and oddly charming - even if it turns out Die Antwoord are deliciously terrible actors (who would have thought?!).
Discussed in full on episode #108 of the Cinereelist podcast, one of us liked it and the other "just wanted it to end."
