Cheri. 2009. Directed by Stephen Frears.
Stephen Frears Cheri (2009) is a lovely costume drama to watch on a dull day. Frear’s adaptation of Collette’s “Cheri” and “The Last of Cheri’ written by Christopher Hampton showed us the Belle Epoch in France specifically Paris. Collette’s novels captured La Belle Epoque in a way others could not. Cheri is full of Art Nouveau sets and floral settings. The pace and tension were sometimes a bit slow and underdeveloped. Nevertheless, the pomp and splendor of the era coupled with the all star cast made the dull times roll on. Especially Michelle Pfeiffer’s Lea who could sweep me off my feet any day. Rupert Friend (Cheri) was simply present and did not have…
Michelle Pfeiffer carries this oddly staged romantic period comedy.
A performance with more depth than the genre usually needs, and you see the pain in every line reading and gesture.
The movie itself is awkward, almost like a TV production.
You expect more from Stephen Frears and co.
If you're into courtesans...pop your Cheri on this movie.
8/10
I had fun with this one.
I found the story to be a lot sweeter than I expected to. I enjoyed the humour too and I laughed aloud quite a few times.
Especially at Bates as Chéri's mum, Madame Peloux.
Pfeiffer (Lea) and Friend (Chéri) had really good chemistry together and I was invested in them both.
The cast did a great job.
My favourite thing about it though was the locations, the sets, the costumes and that divine pastel colour pallette. 😍
So overall, I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I love when a film surprises you like that. I definitely recommend if you enjoy period pieces or any of the actors. It gave me Dangerous Liaisons vibes which I also love and it turns out this is from the same director.
Hubby gave it 7/10
I) A hat movie. II) This movie makes a big deal about Chéri being 19 years old. Unfortunately, they cast an actor who is 28 years old to play him, and while the movie does skip ahead six years, he doesn't particularly look like he is 25 either. Especially a 25 year old who has led a easy carefree life. III) These people lead such hollow lives that it's hard to take any of it seriously. IV) Awesome hats, though.
I can't criticise his character, mainly because he doesn't seem to have one
This line is almost too meta for words, it describes the movie perfectly. Michelle Pfeiffer turns in a wonderful performance in a movie that just seems to...exist around her. But honestly, maybe that's enough?
2nd Kathy bates film of the day, god what a treat! I high key love everything about this film, but especially the greenhouse conservatory, the fun hats, and Rupert friend with long hair and wearing pearls.... the aesthetic is GORGEOUS and damn, I can’t wait to be an old woman taking turns around the grounds in a floaty dress, talking about how I was once very beautiful
