Similar to 2019’s Apollo 11 this film uses newly discovered archival footage and audio interviews to tell the story of the Chernobyl accident through the eyes of the people who were actually there. And the end result is nothing short of devastating.

A tough but stimulating watch relying solely on primary footage and first person narration in detailing the tragedy at Chernobyl and the unfathomable lack of transparency shown with regard to the protection of Russian citizens and soldiers.
There were some absolutely wild shots in this that had my heart in my throat but the MVP goes to the scene exhibiting a shift by two liquidators out on the roof with their shovels.
Will likely be one of the scariest films of this year for me.
Love that documentaries are more & more using restored archive film footage for the basis of their storytelling. Wish that it had been a bit more thorough, some events feel glossed over, but it’s mostly limited by the footage available and I commend it for remaining dedicated to that.

Solid enough documentary covering some well trodden ground. This does have the benefit of leaning heavily on interviews of the people of Chernobyl as well as tons of recordings and video from the events. Much better than a bunch of talking heads.
Also, lots of gnarly footage of people dying gruesome deaths from radiation exposure. Soooooo, if that's your thing.....here ya go.
Wow. They filmed everything. Like, everything. Probably thinking that they would make a heroic documentary/propaganda film about how they did a great job.
But maaaaaan. Seeing the behind-the-scenes was bone-deep chilling to me.

Any recounting of Chernobyl will always terrify me but watching the men shoveling debris off the roof while a clock ticks in the background was the most bone-chilling.

I decided to knock out this documentary that can be found on HBO Max, It most uses actual footage that was filmed during the Chernobyl disaster. Some of it has been recently discovered and it says some of that had never been released before. Some of the interviews are from the time of the disaster and there are some that are more recent as well. The documentary doesn't really try to explain what happened and why, but it does focus on the people that were there to some extent. A neat, albeit disturbing documentary companion-piece to the well-regarded HBO miniseries featuring eyewitness interviews and haunting footage that hadn't been seen previously of people dying agonizing deaths and animals being born with grotesque mutations and deformities caused by radiation and fallout to further indict the USSR's handling of its long-term nuclear power plan. All those rubles saved on cutting corners with nuclear plant design and lax safety regulations will never make up for the numerous lives lost or otherwise ruined by this horrific tragedy.
