Sadly, neither a trans allegory nor a film about a pretty man going to the ball in glass slippers.
Howard has earned a reputation as a journeyman director who takes a script and makes it work on the big screen without much fanfare. Although this has been given a bad rap and the label (of journeyman) is usually taken in a negative light, but the director, over the course of his incredible career, has managed to go one step further and tell stories that fall into obvious territory, yet he still manages to find a way to connect to the story and give you the feeling of being immersed. Some of this is achieved through great acting, such as in Frost/Nixon, and some is achieved through editing, as in this film.
Despite the melodramatic tone and the clear Oscar…

James Braddock- ‘The Pride of New Jersey’. I’ve been wanting to watch this for a while, since Braddock is a fairly popular name in sports history in NY/NJ.
This is a pretty great biopic. Russel Crowe was great, the script was tight, and it was really well made. Definitely one of the grittiest boxing movies I’ve ever seen. I love that they were able to make it so gritty while also really pushing Braddock’s family life. But, of course, the real star of this movie is Paul Giamatti.
Giamatti is mad under appreciated. He definitely should have won a Supporting Actor Oscar for this performance, but lost to George Clooney in Syriana. RESPECT THE KING 😤
A gritty biographical sports drama powered by the artful execution from Ron Howard and brilliant performances from Russel Crowe, Renee Zellweger and Paul Giamatti. During the Great Depression, a washed up Irish-American boxer from New Jersey, James J. Braddock, working as a day laborer when his former manager Joe Gould offers him a one-time slot against a rising young contender. After he wins a shocking upset, Braddock goes back into the ring full time, against the wishes of his frightened wife, Mae. The newfound underdog hero rekindles hope, with his community rallying around him, now called the Cinderella Man, is lined up to fight the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world, Max Baer, an arrogant giant who has already killed…
Sporting movies have always been big business at the box office. From football to motor sport, basketball to baseball, they all have their heroes and legions of fans. Boxing films of course have been dominated over the last 30 odd years by the Rocky franchise, and although the first film had some integrity to it, the rest have been a ruthless cash-in. True life events however can sometimes be even more dramatic than the fiction, and Ron Howard's terrific thirties set film about James J Braddock has as much heart and soul as all those Rocky films put together.
James J Braddock was born in Hell's Kitchen and grew up on the breadline. This true "Cinderella story" of a former…
A really cool true story. Also a total classic for my family.
Oh yah, and Paul Giamatti is incredible. Just sayin.

russell crowe is so FINE in this film literally goodbye
i loved the representation of the time period in this film, it felt so spot on. to be honest, the beginning kind of dragged and i couldn’t get into it, but the second half picked up SO fast. i loved it so much. it was so well done.
otherwise, the story was phenomenal! i loved the entire family dynamic and the conflict between if he should fight or not. the acting in this film was also really well done, all around it was really good!!
the ending of this film (and the film as a whole) is so good, i definitely recommend :)
Wow. Just wow. I fell in love with this film, and yet again I fell in love with Russell Crowe, definitely one of my favorite actors. I can't believe I'm giving full score to a movie with Renée Zellweger in it, is it just me who can't stand her? But in all fairness, she was good in this one.
Ron Howard, you're really getting up there with my favorite directors now. Here he has made a brilliant film. This film is based upon the life of James J. Braddock. He started off as very talented boxer, then he became one of the best, but injuries and bad luck got in his way. In 1930's New Jersey there was a big…
95/100 Phenomenal
What I liked:
- Excellent representation of the time period, events, and people of the Great Depression. The transition from one of the best time periods for America to one of the worst is solidly executed. Whether they be subtle or obvious, I think the struggles in the movie are felt.
- The performances in this movie are awesome. Russel Crowe dominates as Boxer James J. Braddock and captures the characters personal struggles. Paul Giamatti dominates in the position of being the coach.
- The editing in this movie is phenomenal. Brilliantly captures the different perspectives of the events. The final boxing match is a perfect example.
- The emotional hook to the movie is, for…
