Different students from a high school cleaners group each deal with different pressures of being clean and pure while also discovering that the world is dirty and superficial to begin with.
It's worth talking about the process: Glenn Barit and his team shot an entire movie. Then, they took eight frames out of every second and printed them out. Then they photocopied those printouts in black and white. And they took highlighters and physically colored in certain sections of every frame. And then they scanned those images and assembled them back into a movie.
What we get feels like a memory. It is easy enough to dismiss it in the abstract as a gimmick, but when you see it, the process feels vital to what the film is delivering. It is a hazy remembrance of the formative years of a group of young people, in the moments where their perception of…

Admit it, your high school years are the most chaotic years of your life, and whether you love it or not, you can’t help but to look back at your most embarrassing moments in the four or six or whatever the number of years you spent in high school. Cleaners is a comedy anthology about seven high school students and their experience in a catholic school in Tuguegarao City. While their stories differ in severity and hilarity, all of them share one thing–they’re all classroom cleaners.
I’ll admit, I hated the six years I spent in my alma mater. I did a lot of humiliating things, both to myself and others, and I felt like I did not reach my…
Embarrassment. Humiliation. Cringe.
We've all been there. May mga moments talaga tayo nung high school na sana mawala na sa ating isipan. Tangina, ang dami. Di ko na mabilang yung sakin. My high school life was full of shit and cringe that are forever scarred in my memory.
Rebellion. Defiance. Self-discovery.
Anong role niyo nung high school? Basta ako, I'm a bit of a weirdo nerd back then hahaha. Also, I think we can all agree na nakakabadtrip talaga yung mapang-abuso at mapang-api na awtoridad at sistema ng ating paaralan. Actually, ang bait ko nung high school haha. Lagi ko ginagalang at ningingitian ang mga guro dito samin pero deep down, gusto ko na talaga sila awayin, give them the…
I used to think my youth isn't as colorful compared to others, but now I realize that I hold the crayons.
Maybe one day, when I'm old enough, I can feel young again. And I can shout as loud as these cleaners and forget about the future for a moment.
Antolohiya. Anatomiya. Alegorya. Paalala ang pamagat ng matingkad na pag-asa. Tayo ang dyanitor ng madungis na mundo. Tae. Tao. Tayo.

If you are seeing an unexpected number of 5 stars and generally-positive reception, believe it. Believe the hype. Believe the enjoyment.
Glenn Barit's Cleaners, one of the most inventive films in recent memory, completely reinvigorates Philippine cinema, and presents a world for these teenagers that is hopeful, in that their youthful vigor and restless optimism is bigger than any dire challenges they might face. Cleaners is much more than its gimmick, these highlighted photocopied stills perfectly capture the essence of a fading memory, symbolic of a time that passed, these highlights representing our selves. These are the memories that made us, us. As endearing as it is nostalgic, and as chaotic as it is blissful. Cleaners is perfect cinema as a time capsule encapsulated.
P.S The needle drops in this movie are to die for. (I'm talking bout you, tinikling scene)
VL Raza. Or a reminder of past loves, mistakes, regrets and hopes. Reading K-Zone near the 9 o'clock. Honestly, I used to be a bully before, in an everyday school bus and on a now defunct website named Google +, as a product of really mean angst. I just wish I can talk to the people who didn't deserve it by saying sorry. But like what user (and bestie) Tanuki said to me earlier, we have to learn to forgive ourselves first, when remembering these sorts of things. Me and the others first need to open ourselves, then we'll enjoy some KFC in a certain Discord voice chat, if you know what I mean.

"Aaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!"

this somehow successfully enveloped a few of the common philippine high school experiences, memories, and tropes, but i suppose it still lacks to fully depict each single relatable moments that every filipino can connect with instantly.
the neon highlighter filter—simultaneously the texture—is the best aspect this film can boast about; i like how utterly witty the characters having their own color representation is.
i can also notice some influences gotten from wong karwai and wes anderson's films, especially on its cinematography.
some scenes were tolerably comical, which i think should have not been, to begin with. plot-wise, i just prefer this film to be more realistic and more distinguishable. still and all, a very fun movie that is a must watch for every filipino millennials/gen z together with their friends and cliques.
i just miss to be in a classroom y'all
