  I gave this another shot after being totally unmoved by it out of Sundance. Three weeks ago my wife and I welcomed a beautiful baby girl into our life and so I am now legally and emotionally required to be moved to tears by coming of age stories in which a father truly sees and comes to understand his daughter. I don’t make the rules. Wonderful movie.

  the specific pleasure of watching a good movie get away with the kind of bullshit that usually makes you want to vomit. a very touching addition to to that beloved sub-genre of sundance experience.

  Crazy how such a cliche and predictable movie could be sooooooo endearing and enjoyable. Loved watching this so much, I always felt so emotionally attached and invested and it didn't feel like I was being Oscar-baited to in the slightest. Emilia Jones is going places. Loved the choir teacher in this too. Man I miss high school choir!

  “i’m happy that you know who you are”

  what a nice way to start this festival: i can’t imagine a more pleasantly accessible way to frame a film like this. it keeps a down to earth handle on the complex subject matter with respect and self awareness while also maintaining a light touch when it comes to the genre it occupies. it’s not perfect but was surprisingly comfortable, very warm and funny and enjoyable to watch. and i cried! it’s definitely cheesy at times but i think it works in this instance, the emotional core is so solid that by the ending it totally won me over. it might also feel too safe for some people…
